She didn’t argue this time. Instead, she went over to the table and took a seat. I pulled out two bowls and spooned out the chili. I set hers aside, and then dumped more spices into mine.

She let out a soft giggle. “What are you adding to yours?”

“Ghost pepper flakes.”

“Oh.”

“I assume you don’t want any?”

“Not unless you have milk or water.”

Water. Humans needed water, right? My body was made for the desert, so I reserved food and liquids differently. Worry drifted through me.

“You need water,” I mumbled. “Why didn’t you ask?”

“Well…you’re kind of holding me captive. Most outlaws would say no…”

I scoffed and bent down, looking through one cabinet. Surely, I had water here she could drink. If not, then perhaps I could boil some of the water in the spring. My mind was already in problem solving mode as I opened up a bag shoved underneath, discovering several bottles of it. I plucked out the sack and set all the bottles out.

“Raider, I’m fine,” she insisted.

I was sure she wasn’t fine. Humans needed water and I wasn’t sure when she’d last had any.

I grabbed a bottle, both bowls of chili, two clean spoons, and went to the table. I sat down across from her, placing everything in front of us.

“It’s not much, but hopefully it’ll help your stomach.”

“It’s perfect,” she sighed.

Her praise made me feel good. More than good. It seemed to satisfy a deep part of me.

I waited for her to pick up the spoon and take the first bite. Her face lit up, a soft hum leaving her. I liked that sound.

“When I have my kitchen, I can make all sorts of things,” I sighed, taking the first bite.

It wasn’t my best, but it would do.

“This is delicious,” she hummed, taking another bite. “I hate cooking. Madam Moonie has a chef for our starship and they make our meals when we’re traveling. I prefer that, I think. I’m just not very good at it. Well, I could probably learn, but I like being taken care of.”

Her rambling was endearing.

“Do you like traveling so much?” I asked.

“I love traveling. I’ve been traveling for years now.”

“Do you ever wish you had a home to come back to?”

She paused for a moment, staring at me. I looked up, unsure if I’d asked something wrong. Maybe it had been too invasive of a question.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. “Was that rude of me to ask?”

“Nothing. You’re easy to talk to when you’re not pissing me off.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle. Perhaps we could form some sort of alliance.

Maybe being stuck with Mari wouldn’t be that bad.
