I sped faster, coming out the opening. We raced through a wider passage.

“Hold on, sugar,” I said.

She nodded against my chest.

We shot out between two massive rocks, cresting over the top of a hill. I glanced back over my shoulder, seeing the lights of solarcars hovering in the distance, searching below.

We soared down the hill, going faster than what would have been safe on any other solarbike. But Buck was trusty and I knew I could push the limits.

I’d get us to the ship. One way or another.

At the bottom of the hill, there was a paved road with traffic. The sirens suddenly became louder, but I ignored them as I merged straight onto the road. I ignored the honks, swerving around other moving vehicles.

Being on the main road was a bad idea, but we had to get in the right direction before I was able to veer off.

My hearts pounded. I’d never been this desperate to keep someone safe before. I feared they would catch us and I’d never see her again.

I leaned in, racing down the road, weaving between traffic.

My hearts pounded in sync with Mari’s. I could feel her, her presence comforting me. Driving me.

Within a few minutes, we were speeding into city limits. My eyes widened as Mari’s face flashed across electronic billboards.

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS HUMAN?

Pictures of her, followed by pictures of me.

WANTED: RAIDER THE OUTLAW

A bounty flashed across the screen too.

Fifteen milliondhar.

My stomach twisted. That was a steep bounty. Aside from the authorities, bounty hunters would be after me too.

I veered off onto another road and then an alley between two towering buildings. I slowed into the shadows as sirens sailed, getting closer.

“We will stay here for a few moments, sugar,” I told her.

She looked up, giving my cheek a kiss. “It’ll be okay,” she whispered.

I wanted to believe her. I wanted her to be okay.

I wanted to be okay too.

She kissed my cheek again, teasing me. I let out a low chuckle, trying not to think about doingmore.

I waited until the sirens were gone. The city was still loud and bustling around us, but felt normal again. I peeled out of the shadows, going back to the alley opening. I merged back onto the road, going the speed limit now.

We weren’t far. Only a few minutes from the east side of Canyon City. The wind whipped around us, sand stirring in the air as I took us closer to where we needed to be. Large ships coming and going hovered over our heads, a line formed as they waited to land or depart. Lights flashed above, but they weren’t siren lights.

Luck. All we needed was a little bit of luck now.

“Hold on, sugar,” I whispered.

We’d take the back way. I had a feeling that they’d be guarding the ship, if it was even still there.

The east docks were a landing zone for all intergalactic traffic. They were heavily guarded and fenced in. The back area was an entrance for employees.
