The next day went by quickly.

I wanted more than anything to be back in bed with my cowboy, but it was go time.

Our group had made a plan. It was a simple one, and relied a bit on luck. I wasn’t the happiest with it, and neither was Raider, but we’d come to a compromise.

We knew that Rider would make an appearance tonight.

If we could get a confession, then Raider’s name would be cleared. But then, a duel would most likely need to happen in order to keep it that way.

My stomach twisted. All I could do at this point was hope.

“I’ll be here, sugar,” Raider said, pulling me into a hug. He held me tight, his touch comforting me. “I’ll be hiding, but I’ll be here. We’ll keep you safe. The moment he shows up, I’ll be here.”

I nodded, drawing in a deep breath.

“We’ll be here too,” Stella said.

I let go of Raider and he tipped his hat, leaving us backstage. I could hear the audience filling the seats in the Comet Canyon Saloon, their chatter soft in the background.

I turned to Stella. Both of us were already dressed in our costumes. She wore a beautiful pink sheer robe and a purple corset underneath, her braids cascading down her back.

“Toras and Zin are on standby. They’re ready to fight this guy too,” she said.

I sighed and stepped into a hug from her, holding onto her. She squeezed me tight.

“It’ll be okay,” I said. “It’s not like the future of my mate is riding on this or anything.”

“It’ll work out,” Stella said. “The universe brought you together for a reason, right?”

“Right.”

Stella let go of me and raised a brow. “Lucky man, too.”

I grinned. “Do you approve?”

“Only because I heard you down the hall.”

I feigned a gasp. “You eavesdropper.”

“Mari, even the sound suppressors had a hard time keeping up. You got a voice on you.”

The two of us burst into a fit of giggles. Stella slipped her arm in mind, leading me towards the stage.

“But yes. I’m happy for you. And now we can go on double dates. Unless you decide to stay here…”

“He wants to travel with me,” I said. “But…we’ll figure it all out. Just like you, Toras, and Zin did. You’re making it work.”

“Yes, we are. And wonderfully too. Do you need anything else, Mari?”

“No,” I said, drawing in a deep breath.

The stage was waiting for me.

Max’s voice echoed through the back waiting area. “Everyone, showtime is sixty seconds out!”

“Good luck,” Stella whispered.

I nodded and left her, taking my position behind the curtains.
