I knew I had to drag my ass out of this car and head into the grocery store, but I couldn’t summon the energy just yet. My eyes start to flutter closed then abruptly burst open when a knock sounds at my passenger-side window. Muscles tense with surprise, I twist, ready to defend or attack. I dissolve into a pool of smitten goo when I see Scott’s smiling face. He’s waving at me.

Unlocking the doors, I gesture to him to open it. He does, then he slides in right beside me.

“Hey, you. This is a nice surprise.”

Scott doesn’t reply. My chin is grabbed in a gentle but demanding way, and my face is pulled to his. Our lips crash together.

Heat instantly engulfs me. My hands fumble, unclipping my seat belt so that I can hold on to him as we ravage one another. As soon as I’m free, I angle my body so that I can deepen our kiss.

A full-body shiver takes me when his cold hand snakes up my side and under my jacket. I gasp, the sensation catching me off guard but heightening the emotion of the moment. His lips begin to work their way to my cheek and over my jaw, peppering kisses as he journeys lower.

When he reaches the sensitive area near my ear, I give a joyful giggle, then moan. Oh hell, I missed this. My head tilts to the side, giving him better access.

My eyes flutter open, a teasing remark on my tongue, when reality hits me. We’re in the middle of a public parking lot. Anyone could see us.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be seen with Scott, making out in a car. I just didn’t want to forget myself and take our hot make-out session too far. I was desperate for him, and if we didn’t cool it soon, we’d be caught in a very compromising position.

“Honey,” I start, but my voice is too breathy. “Scott, honey. We have to stop.”

“But we’re—” His words cut off when he raises his gaze to mine, his attention being caught by something over my shoulder. “Oh. Right.”

I give a little laugh at how sad he sounds. I can relate. Caressing the side of his face, stopping at his stubbled cheek, I give him another kiss, quick this time, then right myself back in the driver’s seat.

“Missed you,” he confesses, hand reaching for mine.

“Missed you too.”

“Are you okay? You look tired.”

“I am, but I’m good. Before you popped up, I was trying to gather my energy to go inside. I left my fridge empty again before my shift. If I don’t get food now, I never will. My bed is calling.”

He huffs a laugh. “What if my bed was calling you too?”

“What?”

“Come over to my place. My mom is picking up the kids for the weekend in a couple of hours and I don’t have to head to the hangar until tomorrow. Stay with me.”

It takes my tired brain a second to understand what he’s asking me. Once I do, I begin nodding like a fool.

“Yes. Yeah, I’d like that.”

“Me too,” he says, his smile bigger than I’ve ever seen it before. He claps his hands, as if to break us both out of our trances. “Okay, I have to go pick up the kids from day care and you need to grocery shop. Meet at my place in an hour?”

“Perfect.”

With one last too-quick kiss, he opens the car door and slides from my reach. Bracing his hands on the hood, he leans down one more time.

“Be safe, baby.”

I can feel myself blush at his sweet words. Logically, I know I should have gotten out of the car with him, but I need a moment to get myself together. Butterflies begin to flutter in my belly, leaving me with a giddy feeling so intense that all I want to do is dance and yell out my happiness.

I can’t do either of those things in a crowded parking lot without someone thinking I’ve lost the plot, so instead I do a mini flail of excitement in the privacy of my car. Then, wanting to get to Scott and the kids as fast as possible, I pull myself together and head in to grab groceries.

There’s an extra bounce in my step while I collect all my goodies, happiness giving me the boost of energy I needed.
