“Why do you care so much about Gemma, hmm?” Franco pokes Marco in the chest. “Gemma’s not your wife.”

“No but Emilia is, and Emilia loves her sister. I have a worried, crying wife who just wants her sister home. I promised her I’d get Gemma back, and that’s what I intend to do.”

Franco scoffs. “You’re going soft. Listening to what your wife wants. I say we kill this fucker and be done with this.” He spins back around and aims his gun at my head again.

I lift a finger. “Before you kill me, I want you to see something. I have a box behind the counter. Go grab it.”

“I’m not doing anything you tell me to do.” He cocks the gun.

“I think you should really see what’s inside the box.”

Marco sighs deeply before going over to the counter and picking up the box behind it. “What’s inside? A head?”

I keep my eyes glued to Franco. “I told you. I know how to get into places.”

Franco inhales quickly and grabs the box from Marco, yanking it open. His shoulders deflate as he reaches inside and pulls out a card.

“It’s not a head,” Marco murmurs.

“No, of course not. I wouldn’t dream of taking one of the heads of Franco’s new precious family. Or your new precious family, for that matter, Marco. But I did consider it. Giulia, the beautiful matriarch that she is, would have made a great addition to my collection.”

Franco shows me the card, which has his address written on it. “Is this a threat?”

“Yep. I could have killed Giulia, but I didn’t. I could have killed any one of those kids, but I didn’t. I know when to control myself and when to let loose. You both think I’m a wild cannonball, but I’m not. I’m strategic. I make calculated decisions, and I made the decision to not kill any member of the Moretti clan. Because I want to work with you both. So, let’s make a deal and put all this nastiness behind us. Gemma will be returned to her home safely. And I’ll be just as powerful as you two.”

“Deal,” Marco says, surprising me. By the look on Franco’s face, it surprises him, too.

“You really love your wife, don’t you?” I ask.

He doesn’t reply.

“It’s commendable, Marco. Really.” I place my hands over my heart. “I’m touched.” I set my gaze on Franco. “What about you? This deal doesn’t work unless you both agree to it.”

Franco clenches the card in his fist. “You’re not getting anywhere near Giulia. She’s mine.” He tosses the card at me. “If you attack my house, I’ll kill you. But I’m not making a fucking deal with you.”

Marco grabs Franco’s arm. “We need to save Gemma.”

Franco twists out of Marco’s grasps and heads to the door. “That girl was a lost cause anyway. I’m not risking my empire for this fucker.” He spits at me before walking out of the bar.

Marco turns to me. “Do we still have deal?”

“Hmm.” I stroke my chin. “… No.”

Marco grabs the front of my shirt and slams me against the wall. “You will give Gemma back.”

“I’d love to make a deal with you, Marco, but honestly? I’m having too much fun with Gemma. I’d like her to stay a little bit longer. And remember, you can’t kill me if you really do want her back.” I pat his arm as he loosens his grip. “So, have a nice day, Marco. We’ll talk again, I’m sure. In the meantime, try and convince Franco to change his mind.” I give him a wink as I depart, leaving the mighty Marco to stand there looking lost.

When I openGemma’s door, a shoe comes flying at my head. I duck, barely avoiding it. Gemma grabs her other shoe and chucks it at me. She’s back to wearing her black dress. Shame. I wanted to see her beautiful naked body again.

I dodge the second shoe as well. “My, isn’t this a fun welcome.”

She lets out a scream as she rushes for me, hobbling on her hurt ankle but still managing to push me back a fraction. “Let me go!”

“You know I’m not going to do that. Your ankle already seems better.” I grab her arms and press them to her sides. “Stop wiggling.”

“No.”
