She sniffles now. “Yes. I haven’t stopped. Franco hasn’t been happy with me about it, but you’re my daughter. Of course, I’m going to cry. Honey, where are you? Let Marco come save you.” I notice she says Marco instead of Franco.

“Marco knows where I am. He sent men before.”Who all died, thanks to Viktor.

“Right. That’s right. He’ll kill Viktor, don’t worry. He’ll get him. And you’ll be safe, and you can come home.”

I tense. The thought of Viktor dying unsettles me. I shoot him a glance before quickly looking away. Why does it unsettle me? Heck, I tried killing him.

And even then, I couldn’t manage it.

The question is, do I really want Viktor to die? Hearing my mom say it makes it all the more real. Marco will find a way to save me, I know it. Emilia won’t let him rest until he does. Which means, Viktor might very well die, and I’m not sure I want that.

This realization hits me so hard in the chest that I lean forward. Viktor takes a concerned step toward me, but I shake my head, motioning him back.

“Honey?” Mom’s voice brings me back. “Are you still there?”

“Yes, I’m here.”

“Gosh, I was so worried. When we received a box with a vial of your blood in it, I almost fainted.”

I shoot Viktor an annoyed look. He bats his eyes, trying to appear the picture of innocence. “I’m fine, Mom. It was just a small cut.” And then Viktor proceeded to go down on me and give me an overpowering orgasm. Something tells me my mother doesn’t need to know anything about that.

“Good, good. I can’t believe that monster forced you into a marriage. That wasn’t right. Marriage is sacred. But it will be ok, Gemma. When Marco saves you, he’ll kill Viktor, and you’ll become a widow. And then you can put this entire mess behind you. Just please tell me you’re safe. That you’re ok. That he’s not hurting you every day?”

My mind flashes back to all the sex Viktor and I have been having, and I feel guilty. While my mom is worrying about me, I’ve been sleeping with the enemy.

“He’s … he’s not hurting me, Mom.” Viktor smiles, and I stick my tongue at him, making him chuckle. “Mom … he let me use his phone to call you. But I doubt he wants Marco to come and save me. I’m his wife now. What Viktor wants is to make an alliance with Franco and Marco. Tell the men that. If they make a deal with him, then he’ll be a part of this family, and I can see you again. That’s all that Viktor wants.”

“Gemma, no! Your uncle refuses to make a deal with Viktor. By marrying you, that monster only put you in a horrible position. But it won’t give him any more power. It’s a sham marriage. He does not, nor will he ever, be a part of the Moretti family. I refuse to let that man into my life, even if he’s technically married to my daughter, when he kidnapped you.”

I know trying to convince my mom of anything is an impossible task, so I don’t argue. Though, why do I even want to argue? It’s not like I love Viktor. Sure, my body loves him, but my head and heart want nothing to do with him. I should be happy that my mom wants me safe and sound. That she wants Viktor killed, so I can be free of him.

That’s what Ishouldwant. So, why does it feel like Idon’twant it?

“I’m just happy to hear you voice,” I say instead.

“Oh, Gemma.”

“I can’t believe you’ve been this worried about me.”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” She sounds outraged. “You’re my daughter. I just want you safe, honey.”

“The last words I said to you weren’t nice. I said Ihatedyou.” And that fact has haunted me ever since.

“That doesn’t matter. None of that matters. Just tell me how I can help. Give me some clue I can pass on to Marco, so he can get you out of there.”

I look at Viktor again, who’s staring at me with an intense expression. “I … I can’t, Mom.” Viktor holds his hand out for the phone. “I have to go now.”

“Gemma, wait. Please!”

“I’m sorry.” I hang up, then throw the phone at Viktor.

“Woah. Easy there.” He slides the phone back into his pocket. “I let you talk to your mom. You should be happy right now.”

I tuck my knees in close and rest my chin on them. “It’s more complicated than that.”

“Care to explain?”

“Not really. I just want to be left alone.”
