He doesn’t look disturbed in the least. “I didn’t know you cared so much for him.”

“He was helping me!”

Viktor makes an exaggerated show of looking at the dead man. “I’m not sure how much he can help. I’m pretty positive he’s dead.”

“Fuck you, Viktor.” I storm up to him and slap him across the face. “Fuck you.”

He rubs his jaw. “Right back at you, dear. We had a deal, and you just broke it. I was going to offer you freedom in exchange for you, oh I don’t know, notrunning away from me!”

There’s no way I’m in control of this situation, so I shrug and try to look unbothered. “So, I ran. I wanted to see my family again. If you just brought me to them, then I’d stop trying to escape.”

“Ok, fine. I’ll take you to see your family.”

I take a step back. “Really?”

“Sure. When I’m positive they won’t try to kill me on sight!”

I growl and rake my hands over my face. “You’re impossible. Of course, they want you dead. You kidnapped me! Remember?”

Viktor opens his mouth to reply before he shuts it. “Good point,” he says, pointing his finger at me. “But the point still stands. We’re married now, Gemma. You don’t get to just sneak off into the middle of the night. You want freedom? Sure, I’ll give it to you. We can go out together. We can go on dates. But right now, your family wants me dead, and I’m trying to change their minds, which includes you trying to change their minds. If you just rush back to them, they’ll most definitely come after me and kill me. Do you really want me dead?” He looks so earnest as he asks.

I want to scream at him. Scream that yes, I want him dead. But I can’t. And Viktor knows it, too, judging by his smirk.

“So, what are we going to do now?” I ask, feeling tired.

“You’re coming back home with me, and I’ll forgive you for this.”

“Shouldn’tyoube the one asking for forgiveness?”

He waves a hand. “Semantics. Now, let’s go.”

I look back at the old man, lying in his doorway, surrounded by a pool of blood. “We can’t just leave him. He was innocent.”

“True.” Viktor walks over to the man, and after a pause, he yanks the knife out of his throat. He flips it in his hand before turning back to me. “Can’t leave evidence behind.” He whistles as he walks past me. I stare at him in horror.Thisis the man I don’t want to die?

Damnit. Even after this, I still don’t want him dead.

I follow Viktor back to the house, fuming all the way. I was so close to escape. I knew it was too good to be true.

“I’m surprised you didn’t hear me leave.”

Viktor gives me a wink. “Oh, I did. I was just waiting to see how far you’d make it. When I realized you were really going to leave me, I had to intervene.”

“Right. Of course.”

“Of course,” he says cheerily.

When I step into the house, I feel all hope of ever seeing my family again shrivel up and die.

Viktor sweeps me into his arms, making me yelp. He laughs as he carries me into our bedroom and tosses me onto the bed. “I have to say, even though you tried to leave me, I respect the tenacity. Not many people would risk upsetting me.”

“I guess I’m not most people, then.”

He rakes his eyes over me. “No. You’re not.”

I gasp when he flips me onto my stomach in one smooth motion and rips my pants and underwear down. “Viktor, are you seriously thinking about sex right now?”

“Nope. I was thinking about this.” He spanks me.
