“And now …” Her eyes widen. “You do. You care if I get hurt.”

“I do.”

She shifts away from me. “I’m not used to you being so vulnerable with me. It’s honestly kind of scary.”

“Gemma—”

“No. If I go back to my family, then … Franco and Marco will use that to their advantage and surely come kill you.”

“They can try.”

“Viktor.”

I sigh, dropping my head. “That is a real possibility, yes.”

“We might never see each other again.”

“I thought you’d be itching for a chance to escape.”

Gemma looks away from me as her breath comes out faster. “I thought so, too. But now …” She turns back to me, her eyes watering. The sight startles me. “I’d miss you, Viktor. I’ve tried pretending I wouldn’t, but I would. I’d miss you if I never got to see you again.”

I stand up, unable to take all thisemotion. It’s foreign to me. “Shouldn’t I be getting some brownie points for letting you go back to your family? I thought you’d be happier.”

“I do want to see my family again. When I saw Mia today, it made me realize just how much I miss them.”

I raise an eyebrow. “But?”

“But … I’m worried that the moment I leave, Franco will pounce, and he’ll succeed in killing you for real.”

“I’m not an easy man to kill, as you know.”

“I know. I just … it’s complicated, I guess.” She shakes her head, not meeting my eyes.

“You should rest for now. You hit your head pretty hard.”

She grabs my hand, stopping me. “I don’t want to rest right now. Today was crazy, Viktor. You’re right. I could have died, and it’s partially your fault.” I deserve that, I’ll admit. “But I’m not mad at you. I just want to touch you.”

Though surprised, I eagerly go back to her. “You just want to touch me?”

“Shut up.” She grabs my shirt and pulls me to her, kissing me hard. I respond, kissing her back with everything I have as I lean over her on the bed.

“Should we be doing this?” I ask, kissing down her neck. Gemma pants and arches her back, pressing her chest against mine. “I mean, you just went through a lot.”

“I know. And that’s why I just want you to touch me. If this is really the last time we’ll see each other, I want to remember this.”

I lift my head. “So, that’s it. You’re going back home?”

“You’re not going to stop me?”

“Not this time.”

She cups my cheek, looking up at me with her gorgeous eyes. “I have to go home, and you know it.”

“I do.”

“So, let’s make this a night to remember.”

I kiss her deeply, wanting to imprint the feel of her lips on mine. It’s settled. Gemma will return home, and we’ll probably never see each other again. Neither Franco nor Marco will let her out of their sights. I’ll be probably be killed at some point by one of them. And that will be the end of our story.
