Page 28 of Carols and Consent

I text my brothers and let them know where she is. I don’t disturb her. It’s a little self-serving, hearing her sing my song. My fingers join her in tapping the drumbeats.

Aurora’s singing has always been beautiful, but she might have perfect pitch. As the piece continues, I hum the baseline and I’m stoked over how haunting it sounds, how perfect we blend.

“Hey, Travis, I thought Aurora came alone,” a man’s voice says from my side. Dammit, there’s where my celebrity gets me in trouble. It’s a stagehand who’s carrying a bundle of cables. I wave and he moves on.

Aurora’s angelic tones float into the catwalk as she spins around. “I’m sorry, I took a picture of your song. I was singing it without permission.”

I step out from the shadows. “You have my consent, always and forever.”

“It’s gorgeous, with an artistic simplicity. The kids would love performing something like this.”

“Then let’s do it with the kids. But I wrote it for you.” I cross the stage and stop at the edge of the spotlight. My eyes drift to her belly. “Don’t you think they’re a little young?” My effort to make a joke is buried under uncertainty.

She grips her phone nervously at her waist. I reach into her spotlight, take her hands, and bring them to my lips.

“What if I am?” she whispers.

I step closer, covering her hands with mine. “I love you and I think that you are. We’ll figure it out with you. Just don’t shut us out.”

“Deal, as long as you don’t refer to the possible pregnancy in the plural again.”

“Did I do that?” I mock disbelief.

“They’rea little young?”

I wrap her in a hug, frustrated that my brothers arrive.

She pulls away. “What are you all doing here?”

“We were trying to find you. We didn’t like the way that ended. How’d it go with the parents?” Doug asks.

“Exactly as you would think.”

Doug exhales loudly. “First of all, we’re sorry. And don’t bother with telling us an apology’s not necessary. Second of all, I love you, and—”

We cut him off as we talk over each other, vying for her to hear each of us express our love.

“Okay, okay, I get it…but our parents.” She’s young, hasn’t even lived on her own for a year. It’s a fair concern.

“Our parents have a lot of growing up to do. But that’s what we want to ask you. We’re willing to make this real. To be here for you, to have a relationship, for always and forever. But we need to know if that’s what you want.”

“Well, Travis says I’m pregnant, so we might not have a choice.”

“Whoa.” Calvin rests his hand on her shoulder. “You always have a choice. We’re not forcing you into anything. But we hope you’ll choose us.”

“And there’s one other thing you still have to choose.” Big D looks proud of whatever he’s scheming.

“Still?”

“Yeah, you haven’t told us which position you prefer.”

NotonlydidAurorachoose all of the positions, she chose all of us.

That sparked us to make some decisions pretty fast. No world tour, especially since she’s probably pregnant. She agreed to pee on the stick today, but has already moved in. And adding her to our band, we’re exploring Travis’s Viking stuff.
