She’s kind of cute-drunk, but her words, albeit impaired, sting. Is there something to them? She wouldn’t say that if she was sober, would she?

“We’ll take you home, let you sleep it off.” Travis’s eternally dark and broody expression makes him hard to read.

Calvin adds, “We’re taking her back to our place. Make sure she doesn’t get into trouble.”

“It’s now or never, Pappy. I have to help my friend address invitations in the morning.”

My balls threaten to blow a load at her calling Calvin Pappy. Jealousy? I’m totally fucked, in the wrong way.

“We’ll take you wherever you need to be in the morning.” Calvin’s stoic response dismisses the nickname, but I’m stuck.

What if the truth in her earlier statement is that she wants to fuck us? I can’t let that go. “We’ll drop you off in the morning, but when you’re done, you have some explaining to do.”

Puttingthelastzipcode on the final envelope for Bianca’s stepmom’s invitations, I sit back and relax. “I can’t believe we finished all thousand invites.”

Cindy came, too, which was a huge help.

Bianca says, “Thank you so much. I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy my brothers last night if I had to do these all on my own.”

I’m truly happy for her. Even though she didn’t have sex, she had a lot of fun. Cindy did, too. And rumors are swirling about Wendy’s brothers clearing out the sex club for time with her, but she hasn’t messaged us yet. Even though the guys took me home to change clothes, I brush stray glitter off an envelope. “Three out of four isn’t bad.”

An uncomfortable silence is met with sympathetic smiles. I’ve killed the mood. “It’s fine. My brothers are going to get an earful when they pick me up. They want to talk about last night.”

Cindy pats my hand. “They may just be worried about image, like my brothers. Their night with me has to stay super-secret. They’re already in trouble with their coach for a rowdy weekend. Their huge bid last night is all they can afford the media to publicize. The fun side of being a celebrity is great until something goes wrong and then the public scrutiny is vicious.”

“I can’t imagine living like that.” A great reminder that shacking up with my stepbrothers has drawbacks. Our parents already can’t separate stage persona from real life. It’s been a sore point for years.

Bianca puts the pens away and grabs my hand. “You’re bound to find out someday, Aurora. You’re so talented. Have you heard back from theMama Miaaudition?”

“The director lost interest in me when he found out my brothers will be out of town.” Such is my fate. My brothers interfere even when they don’t do anything.

Bianca organizes the invitations in a box to take to the post office. “I’m sorry, sweetie.”

Cindy asks, “Are you still auditioning forWicked?”

“I’m going to focus on theater management, getting my foot in the door at the children’s theater. People should be less worried about whether I bring famous brothers to the table.”

Cindy gives me a hug. “Your time will come.”

“You’ll be brilliant whether you’re on stage or managing it.” Bianca toys with another piece of my glitter that’s stuck to an envelope. “I better get these to the post office before my evil stepmother sees that you added your personal sparkle.”

“My brothers are waiting for me.”

“Consider the audition, though,” Bianca encourages me as we head to the elevator. “Having a big role like that under your belt can’t hurt.”

“You’re right. Why punish myself? I want that role.” Perhaps this director won’t ask if my brothers will attend a performance. And so what if they do? Being cast in a big role will only help my ultimate dream of running a theater. I pull out my phone and reply to the email confirming my audition time.

The elevator ride down from the penthouse gives me time to consider the immediate topic. My brothers. Rather than give them an earful about ruining my night, I’ll get a rideshare to take me to my car. I don’t owe them anything.
