Mom didn’t look convinced. “If you’re sure.”

Vanna smiled brightly at her. “Absolutely.”

After hugging everyone else, she followed me out of the room. “I just need to pack my stuff. I won’t be long.”

I grunted in acknowledgment and sat down on the bottom step of the staircase leading to the bedrooms. She was back ten minutes later, dragging a large suitcase behind her. I met her at the top of the stairs, carrying her suitcase to my car.

Once inside, I struggled for words. But instead of sitting in silence, Vanna turned on the radio, sitting back in her seat once she’d found a station she liked.

The house was a short ten-minute drive from my parents’.

I parked in the circular driveway, turning the engine off. Vanna didn’t say a word, simply slid out of the car and then waited in front for me. I set down her suitcase to unlock the door.

I’d equipped the house with the best security system money could buy. A thick wall surrounded the grounds, and I had four guys stationed around the property.

Vanna’s heels echoed in the empty entrance hall. She was wearing cream slacks that showed off her curves. Her blouse was fitted and stretched over her breasts. More than once tonight, I’d had to resist the urge to reach out and touch her.

Distance. Yes, that’s what we need.I cleared my throat. “You can do whatever you want with the house. It’s yours.”

She took in the marble and crystal, her expression not giving away how she felt about her new home.

“Will you be staying here as well?” she asked, her eyes still on the entrance hall.

“I work a lot, so it’s easier for me to stay in my apartment in the city.”

She turned to the left, then wandered to the empty kitchen before making her way to the dining room, then the living room.

I followed, desperate to break the silence and hating myself for it. I was usually the one who stayed quiet, unnerving everyone else. “I’ll get you a credit card, and you can purchase whatever you need for the house and yourself.”

Nodding, she turned away again. “I see.”

I followed her back to the foyer but stopped before going up the stairs. She was halfway up, looking back when she noticed I wasn’t following.

I pointed to her suitcase that I’d left just inside the front door. “Do you want me to put this upstairs?”

She waved me off. “That’s okay. I’ll get it later.”

Her soft voice was more effective than any Viagra and my dick took notice. I had to get out, or I’d find out just how accommodating my wife was. “Good night, Vanna.”

I didn’t look back when I stalked away, arming the alarm before I locked the front door behind me.

VANNA

He leftme in a house with no furniture. A house that had dust on every surface. The thick walls surrounding the property felt stifling, and since Gabriel hadn’t told me the code to the security system, I couldn’t even go outside without setting the alarm off.

But I shouldn’t be upset. Things could be so much worse. He could be violent. Insist on sharing a bed.

Dismissive and rude I could work with. I really shouldn’t be hurt by his disinterest. And I definitely didn’t need to analyze why his behavior had left a heavy weight sitting on my chest.

I explored the cold, dark rooms of the mansion. Each one was creepier than the last, the high ceilings and lack of furniture making them seem even bigger.

When I finally found my way to the master bedroom, I sighed in relief. Until I didn’t see a bed. Or anything else I could sleep on.

The only thing in the room were boxes stacked in one corner. Somehow, most of my things had ended up here. I didn’t have much else except clothes, which were now neatly hung in the monstrous walk-in closet.

But I certainly wouldn’t need that much space after donating all my clothes as soon as possible. I wanted as little reminders of my old life as possible. Getting rid of my clothes by giving them to a charity seemed like a good first step.
