The small, dark nesting room has a big bed, a low ceiling, and an attached bathroom. It’s calmingly quiet until five big-shouldered shadows stalk inside.

Doctor Morgan pushes past the Wyverns. “Say the word and they’re gone.”

“Give me a few minutes?” I pray they’ll leave without a fight.

“We’ll be outside.” Hunter tugs Finn, glancing at the others. “Guys?”

Slowly, giving me plenty of lingering stares and chances to suck in their keyed-up scents, the Wyverns file out.

When the door shuts, and I’m alone with Doctor Morgan, a whine finally slips.

I grip my throat.

I’m sweat-soaked, slick as fuck, and feverish for a knot.

There’s a second of panic as I wait for the pain to hit.

The death cramps.

But my pussy’s all flutters and ache.

Another pre-game event.

I’m not ready for the main show.

The doctor pulls a drawer-cart to my bedside. “It might feel good to take a bath. Or we have a wide selection of easing aids. The spike should pass within a few hours.”

“You’re sure it’s not my heat?”

“It’s not.” She pats my knee. “You have a few more days.”

I sag against scratchy pillows. Without the guys’ scents blowing up my nose, everything smells medicinal. The opposite of what I need if I’m going to feel at ease.

And there’s one more thing I need to ask—one more thing I don’t want them to know. “Can you run a drug test? This doesn’t feel like a natural spike.”

“I’ll have your blood sent for panels.” She leans in, checking my eyes. “There’s definitely some irritation. Any other symptoms?”

“Itchy nose and throat.” I’ve been scratching them all night.

“I’m on it. Hit the button if you need anything. In the meantime, try to relax.”

I want to resign myself to a night of hospital sex toys, but the light’s wrong, and the blankets are wrong, and I think I’ll finally shatter if I force myself to keep doing this alone.

That doesn’t make it any easier to ask. “Can you…”

“I can have your alphas attend to you if—”

“They’re not mine. Orion. Can you ask if he’ll come in?”

“Of course. Rest, Lilah. You’re going to be just fine.”

Her reassurance does not reassure, and when the door shuts, I shake, rocked by the old fear that Orion’ll ghost.

It hurts to admit I need anyone.

I’m still floored that Wyvern Pack protected me.

“Lilah? What do you need?” Orion’s soft hair glows burnished gold in the dim light. I smell the guys on him, but he rockets to me like they don’t exist.
