I’m only sorry Lilah didn’t get to watch.

Gripping my chest, I point into the sea. “That way.”

Nobody cares how or why I know—all that matters is there’s hope.

We soar.

My heart pounds in time with the chopper blades, and I keep pointing Hunter on the course that feels right.

It’s getting so dark.

Lilah must be freezing.

Shit.

I grip my heart until skin tears.

She’s going to be okay.

We’ll find her and snuggle her and spend the rest of our lives apologizing for letting her be hurt.

My skin prickles.

There’s something bobbing in the waves.

“Got her.” Hunter zooms so fast I almost fall out of my seat, but then I’m jumping out anyway.

Atlas, Finn, and Jett all bail, jumping the second we’re low enough to leap without dying.

It’s Lilah.

But she’s not moving.

“Wait!” Hunter’s frantic bark stops me from following them into the sea. “Fucking idiots. Drop the rescue basket!”

They’re almost to her, churning through the waves.

I won’t get there any faster.

Need to be here, ready to get Lilah warm.

So, I lower the basket and wait for the alphas to bring back my omega.

Once I have Lilah in my arms, I’m gonna latch on like a squid.

And I’ll never fucking let her go.

FORTY-FIVE

FINN

My Star’s hair floats like seaweed.

Mermaid girl.

The brown streams are the only color in the ocean, her pale skin a flash of silver against the black-and-white waves.

I tear through the water, long arms and longer legs churning through whitecaps.
