Rachel’s nose scrunches, wrenching her face into a gargoyle mask.

“Perfect.” I skip off to claim a corner in the pole studio and start practicing my routine.

I’m five steps down the hall before Rachel rages after me.

“Bitch! How dare you—”

Finn flashes between us, shielding me behind his broad back.

A sinister warning rattles in his chest, but it’s only a warning for her.

To me, it’s omega uppers.

My could-be mate, protecting me with his body.

Defending my honor.

Swoon.

Damn it.

Rachel’s lip trembles. She breaks out big, brown doe eyes, all glassy and fake innocent. “Finn…”

“You don’t say his name.” The words whip out my traitor mouth.

Finn’s rumble sweetens, good as stroking between my thighs, but this time, I’m pissed enough to not get sucked in by the sound.

“How can you be so mean?” Rachel says in a baby voice that makes me twitch. She glances up at Finn through damp lashes, coy and begging for help.

The audacity of playing the pity card.

The girl took a baseball bat to my skull and sent me to be raped with a clear conscience. Let alone all the other violent, shady shit she’s pulled.

I’m done being her victim.

I cock back, flatten my palm, and blindside her with the slap I’ve been charging for fucking years.

Her head wrenches to the side, and the impact’s so loud, it drowns out her pathetic mousey squeak.

Rachel collapses in a heap.

I planned a speech.

A truly epic monologue calling her out for her abuse.

But it won’t change anything. Rachel’s rotten beyond redemption, and she doesn’t deserve my words.

Just one last, real-talk warning. “I’m filing a police report.”

She pales, but quickly regains her old-money confidence. “All I did was introduce you to a pack that’s a better fit for your status. It’s not my fault your charm makes men want to—”

“Can I kill her?” Finn’s hand hovers at his hip, a half-second away from drawing a blade, he could’ve already pulled if he weren’t waiting for my permission.

Good boy.

“I’ll tell you when.” I pull him down the hall, loving the way he rumbles under my fingers.

I have to laminate this memory so it never fades.
