So, I’m glad they admit the truth and all, but their apology isn’t the one I need. “Why aren’t they here?”

“Because they broke into your suite three times, destroyed a waiting room, and pissed off the clinic’s board.” Scorpio growls in a disapproving tone I’m glad is for them instead of me. “Then we got a ping on Dominik Redfang’s location and sent them to end the bastard.”

“And they just…went?”

“They weren’t given a choice,” Hikaru says.

Thing is, they had a choice.

They always have a choice, and they always choose something, somewhere, someone else. “Even Orion?”

“He’s on house arrest at the compound,” Scorpio says. “The Redfangs made another grab for him when he was in the clinic’s lobby.”

“On house arrest,” I repeat, because I can’t be hearing him right. “Alone and on house arrest right after his heat. Without his alphas. After a kidnapping attempt.”

“For his safety,” Hikaru insists.

Yeah.

No.

“You can’t leave an omega alone after a traumatic heat. Unless you want him to be crazy?”

“But you’re not…” Max frowns.

“Um.” Are his eyes working? I’m like a cavewoman after a thaw, brown hair a colony of birds’ nests, covered in patchy scabs, melted fudge, and pillow lines. My pheromones need no further introduction. I repeat it for the knuckleheads in the back row. “You can’t leave an omega alone after a heat.”

“He’s fine,” Scorpio insists in a stoic man way that makes me want to kick his thick shin. “We’re here to talk about you.”

Here it comes.

“We heard that you attempted to register for heat rotation.” Hikaru quirks a brow. “That won’t be necessary.”

“I didn’t attempt to register. I registered.” And it’s more necessary now than fucking ever.

This is textbook Wyvern behavior.

Just wait.

Bet they already have another dodgy contract ready for my forced signature.

I clutch Kieran’s knife strap, waiting for them to drop the other shoe. Hope it’s a stiletto, because I’ll stab them with the heel if they try to tell me what to do.

They can’t.

The only reason I ever played along was because I had hope. As long as I was a dud omega, I could escape my fate. Now that I’m awakened, they have zero leverage.

“But they’re your mates,” Max says weakly.

“That means nothing.” Our connection only gives them the superpower to hurt me harder. It makes me weak for them when I need to be strong.

Not points in their favor.

“You need a pack,” Kieran insists.

“I need alphas. That doesn’t mean I have to mate.”

“It wouldn’t,” Scorpio says, “but we’re talking about a scent-matched pack. There’s no walking away from that bond.”
