“Nevermind. Just curious. I just. Really, I don’t know. I feel like there’s a definite something between us. I just want to know everything about you.”

His eyes dark and cold searched mine, not quite believing me. His strong jaw was set. “My work is boring. However, I am going to be pretty busy this week. I won’t be around much. But I was hoping,” he paused, “that you might like to go out tonight with a friend of mine.” Wilder’s strong arms pulled me closer as the warm water enveloped us.

“Who’s the friend?” Maybe he wasn’t quite ready to share, for whatever reason that may be. Maybe it was embarrassing, maybe it was shady. But I knew the man he showed me was kind and gentle. And he cared about me. Asking me to meet a friend of his was his way of letting me into his life just a little more.

“Levi. He wants to meet you. And I want you to meet him.” Wilder kissed me behind my ear. Levi was important to Wilder, and this was the way he was letting me further into his life.

“I’d love to.” I didn’t feel much better about the mystery that was growing around Wilder. But my heart was falling for him even further.

Chapter 14

WILDER

This was what I wanted, I wanted to have her in my life as much as I safely could. I felt so fucking nervous. I felt like a fucking teenager who was nervous about my girlfriend meeting my friends. Despite the warm evening, the rain in the early afternoon left puddles in the street. The streetlights reflected off of them and the wind sent the leaves rustling against each other while I waited on the sidewalk for her to come down. My breath was taken when she came hopping down the front steps of the brick apartment building looking hot as hell tonight. She wore a tight dress that hugged the curves of her body. I pulled her toward me, my hands wandering over the swell of her ass.

“Hey!” Anna giggled as I tried to reach up her dress. “We’re going to be late!” She sidestepped me and twirled around to the limo that I had arranged for the night.

“Damn. It’s torture to see you looking the way you do and not do anything about it.” I replied, stealing a quick kiss.

I knew she was starting to get a little suspicious of my personal life. I could see it in her eyes as we were in the shower. I knew that eventually, she would want to know more about me outside of our relationship. I relied on her ignorance of Chicago and the reputation that preceded my name for too long. It was bound to catch up sometime. But if I could just hold her off, I could pretend to have a normal relationship for just a bit longer before a decision had to be made. I was getting a taste of what I had missed out on for years, and I wasn’t ready to give it up yet.

I slid in next to her and poured her a glass of champagne. I wanted everything to go smoothly tonight. I knew that this was the closest I had ever come to love. Despite my charade, I had a decision to make soon. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to hold on to Anna, tell her about my life, and hope that she was willing to try. Or if I should let her go let her go. She was so innocent. And I could corrupt that. The gentlemanly thing would be to send her packing before she got in too deep.

I had told Anna that I wasn’t going to be around much the following week. And that was true, I had things to do. But I would also use this time to think of the future I wanted to pursue. If she was a part of it, then she will need to know the basics of my family and what the Kavanagh name means. If I chose to keep her in the dark, this may be my last evening with her. This week, hopefully, I would talk to Matthew. Things can go either very bad or nothing would come of it and after that, I would know what to do

“So what’s going to keep you so busy this week?” Anna asked as if reading my mind.

“I have a couple of meetings and a deal to wrap up.” It’s not a total lie. I take a drink of the champagne. “How is Alexis doing? Is she still seeing that doctor?” I tried to change the subject and it worked. Anna started talking enough for both of us about Alexis and how the doctor she was seeing was a dick. My word, not hers. Anna didn’t fill the silence to just hear herself talk. She was different from the other bimbos that I hung around. Anna talked because she truly wanted me to know everything about her life. She wanted me there and to be a part of it.

We pulled up in front of the club and Anna grabbed my hand as we walk in.

“Good evening Mr. Kavanagh.” I’m greeted as we walked through the door to the club. Anna gave me a look out of the side of her eyes. I didn’t tell her about my family’s connection to the club. I probably should. Just another lie. Another thing hidden from her that wouldn’t be able to remain hidden much longer.

I pulled her close once inside, remembering the sleazy guy from last time, as I guided her to the staircase that led to the second floor.

“I was curious about what was up here. They knew your name. You must come here quite often.” Anna fished for more information.

“Something like that. Levi’s already here.” I directed Anna over to the table in the corner.

“Levi.”

“Wilder!” Levi apparently having already had a few drinks, hugged me and then hugged Anna. “It’s good to finally meet you, Anna. I’ve been wanting to meet the girl who has finally snagged him. Let me get you two some drinks. Whiskey for Wilder and what would you like Anna?”

“Vodka lemonade, please. Thanks.”

We get settled into the booth and Anna started to tell Levi about all the events coming up for the humane society. And Levi regaled Anna with stories from my childhood. Those two had never met a stranger, they could keep up a conversation with anyone. They were the lucky ones that weren’t looking for danger or ulterior motives in every conversation.

“I remember once, when we were about 8, me and Wilder, we had snuck out of the house through the window. I had been trying for weeks to convince him to sneak out, and he was never willing to break his father’s rules. Anyway, it was the 4th of July and I had finally convinced him that we could get out and in without getting caught. We had snuck out this window. I had brought some bottle rockets and we were going to shoot them off in a field.”

“I just want to say, I only came along because Levi was going to go regardless. And I didn’t want him to kill himself.” I added in. We’d all had a few drinks and we’re really starting to loosen up. As I was holding Anna close with my arm around her shoulder, she slid her head into the crook of my neck.

“Yes, Wilder was always the level-headed one. Anyway, so we go into this field a couple of miles down the road. And I started setting up these fireworks. And I could hear Wilder behind me saying this was going to end badly.” The waitress comes by and brings us all another round.

“So what happened? Anything bad?” Anna asked.

“The farmer had noticed the first couple of bottle rockets and came out to investigate. He pulled up real fast in his old beat-up truck. And as soon as we saw the headlights we booked it out of there.”
