Shrug.

Fuck it. Rolling my chair away from the table, I pushed to my feet and grabbed my stuff, including the empty coffee cup from earlier.

Nate glanced up at me, a flicker of emotion playing across his face. It almost looked like…satisfaction.

Ah, so that was his game. Annoy me until I gave up and quit. Did he really think it would be that easy? I had never walked away from a job, and he would take a hell of a lot more than silence and sullenness to make me start now.

“Get up.”

His eyes widened briefly before narrowing into slits. “Why?”

Well, at least he was speaking again. “We’re going to lunch.”

“What if I don’t want to?”

“That ship already sailed, kid.”

“I’m not a kid.”

My answer still stood. There had been ample opportunity for him to voice his opinion. If he hadn’t taken advantage of it, that wasn’t my problem. More to the point, I was done indulging his shitty attitude.

“Let’s go.”

I felt kind of sorry for Gage. He seemed like a nice guy, and I knew he was just trying to do his job. That didn’t mean I intended to make it easy for him, though. In fact, I planned to do everything I could to make sure he regretted taking me on as a client.

A shame, really.

While I did tend to gravitate more toward the female persuasion, I hadn’t lied when I’d told him I liked men as well as women. I’d never really had a “type,” though, not until I’d walked through the doors of that conference room.

Gage Ramsey was definitely my type.

Tall and muscular, with dark hair and angular features, he exuded masculinity just by breathing. I had expected to find him dressed in a stuffy suit, and honestly, that might have been better. The way his black V neck had stretched across his broad shoulders had done little to calm my racing pulse.

Then, he’d looked up, and I’d found myself drowning in a pair of gray-blue eyes the color of summer storm clouds.

Too bad he’d had to ruin everything by opening his mouth and reminding me why I had to be there in the first place. It wasn’t fate or some meet-cute like in the movies. We hadn’t crossed each other’s paths by luck or happenstance.

Our meeting, like so many other things in my life, had been designed and carefully orchestrated by the senator.

It wouldn’t be the first time I had been used as a tool for her political ambitions. Of course, she only cared about me—and how I could benefit her—during election years. Outside of that, she couldn’t be bothered to remember I existed.

“So, Nathan, tell me something about yourself.” Seated across from me at the table, Gage circled a spoon around his bowl of chili.

“Like what?” He had a whole damn file on me. I doubted I could tell him anything he didn’t already know.

“What are some things you like to do in your spare time?”

“Drink. Get high. Fuck.” That’s what all the gossip sites said, so it had to be true.

He didn’t even blink at the crude words. Instead, he bobbed his head a couple of times and spooned chili into his mouth. Then, he washed it down with a swig of water before focusing on me again.

I had to give him props. I probably would have strangled me by now, but nothing seemed to ruffle Gage’s feathers.

“What kind of movies do you like?”
