I shook my head. “No, I don’t. By the way, May broke the bonds between the Butcher and me a couple days ago. It was odd and I was kind of freaked out, but it’s done. He probably felt it, but now he can’t find me through them.”

“That’s one bright spot. As far as the murderer goes, there’s not much we can do about it right now. Take precautions and let the sheriff do her job.” Bree helped me up and we headed over toward the new parking lot that Bran had finished. It would hold eight cars, and the signs he had made for me were gorgeous. Elegant and refined, the woodcarving on them was brilliant. “So, are you and Bran dating?”

“Maybe. I don’t know. I’m maybe kind of dating Faron, too. I like both of them, and yet…am I ready to dateanyoneyet?” I sighed. “I’m trying to keep things casual.”

“You want my opinion?” Bree asked as we headed back to the house. It was nearing dinner time.

“Do I have a choice or are you going to give it to me regardless of what I say?”

“The latter,” she said. “I think you should take it slow, enjoy the company of both, and then decide later if and when it becomes an issue.”

“I’m good with that.” I glanced at the sky. It was nearly five. “Okay, what say you and I and Fancypants toss the pizzas I bought into the oven and watch a marathon ofTerafin House?”

Terafin Housewas the latest period piece—half romance, half drama, and all highly romanticized fantasy. And given all the grim things in my life lately, it was exactly what the doctor ordered. As we laughed and went inside, locking the night away, I stared out the window for a moment before shutting the curtains. With a murderer on the prowl, it seemed the cautious move to make.

Fancypants joined us as we curled up on the sofa with ice cream. The pizzas were baking, giving off a delicious tomato-yeasty aroma, and everything inside felt comfortable and cozy. But I could feel that, just outside the window, out in the world, events were brewing. I could feel them as certain as I could feel my heart beat. And whatever was on the way felt foreign and strange…with a glimmer of danger hiding behind it.
