“Dessert.”

He moved out of the way, and I covered my mouth as I took in the display. There were sprinkles, crushed candies and cookies, whipped cream, ice cream, chocolate syrup. He made a sundae bar. My favorite. “How did you know?”

“I asked Austin.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. Just had room service bring up the ice cream. We should eat before it melts.”

One thing I knew for sure was he’d melted my heart. I just didn’t know how long it would last before it froze over again when he found out the truth and left me.

Scotty and I didn’t sleep a wink, but it was worth it.

We ate ice cream, had sex, talked about mundane things, had sex again, got room service breakfast, and finally checked out and came home.

He had work to do, so after he walked me in, he went to his place to change and go to his office.

I couldn’t stop thinking about him all day, and a part of me thought I imagined it. He has been nothing short of perfect, and that was before he gave me the best night of my life.

Junk food, fun, surprises. I hadn’t ever had a night like that, and no matter what happened, I’d cherish it forever.

I was exhausted and just about to log off for the day when I got an email alert. There wasn’t a subject line, but I opened it anyway. A photo slowly filled the screen, and I pushed back in my chair and covered my mouth.

It was a picture of Scotty and me outside the hotel. There was a caption underneath that read, Embarrass your family again, and there will be consequences.

“What the fuck?” I slammed my screen shut and got to my feet on wobbly legs, adrenaline taking over. I then ran around the house, double-checking the locks. When I got to the patio door, it hit me. “Oh my God.”

When Henry got out, it wasn’t because I left that door open. Dad was having me followed. He had someone break into my apartment to spy on me. He was watching. He was fucking with me, threatening to ruin the best thing that’d ever happened to me. “Just leave me alone!” I screamed.

This was why I couldn’t let anyone get close to me. The only reason he hadn’t tried to use Bristol against me was because she was with a man with money, a doctor, and it wasn’t worth the stain on his reputation when Matthew fought back.

Why couldn’t he just leave me be? Why wouldn’t he let me be happy? “Please. Leave me the fuck alone!” I pounded my fists against my thighs, knowing he would win.

Someone banged on my door, and my body jolted. “Open the door, Paris. Who’s in there?” Scotty yelled.

Thank God it was him, but what was he talking about? I slid the chain off and opened the door. Scotty wore a mask of fury and pushed through, grabbing me to shove behind him. “Where is he?”

“Where is who?”

“Whoever the fuck is in here.” His shoulders tensed as he looked around.

“Nobody’s in here.”

His fingers dug into the arm he’d never let go of. “I heard you yell at someone to leave you alone.”

“Oh.” I wanted to tell him, but I couldn’t. He’d want to do something, and I didn’t want anything bad to happen to him. “Nobody’s here. There was this stupid fly that’s been bugging me all day.”

He turned around and asked in disbelief, “A fly?”

“Yes.”

“You have five cats.”

“They’re lazy.” Which wasn’t a lie. “I had a mouse in here once, and I jumped up on the kitchen counter, and all five of them just watched it run around. They’re very domestic.”

I saw his lips smile just before they were on mine for a soft kiss. I closed my eyes and let his lips caress mine. “Hi.” One word from him was all it took for me to calm down.
