Eden looks me in the eyes and nods. “I did.”
Goddamnit.
“Come here,” I grit out, grabbing Rory by the arm. This ain’t a conversation I want an audience for.
I lead Rory away from the old ladies, past clusters of MC men, and away from the pounding music. When we’re far enough away that no one can hear us, I swivel to face her.
“You can’t be here,” I growl.
“What do you mean?” Rory challenges. I think I hear a little tremor in her voice, but her chin juts out defiantly.
“You can’t be here. Like… this.” I wave my hand up and down.
“Like what?”
“Like…”
I search my brain for the words. Nothing comes.
“You smell good,” I blurt out, finally, angrily.
She blinks. “I… smell good?
“Yeah.” I run a rough hand through my hair. “It’s distracting.”
Ugh. This fucking sucks. Instead of intimidating her into leaving, she actuallysmirks. “Should I have rolled in a cow pasture before I came? You want me to stop showering or something?”
“That would be an improvement, yeah.”
“Not gonna happen.”
“And then, you dress like…” I wave my hand at her again. “That.”
Rory looks down at her clothes, then back up at me. Her eyes narrow. “Are you trying to police what I wear, dearhusband?” She puts ice into the word.
Shit. Goddamnit.My anger mounts with my frustration. It ain’t like I have any problem with women dressing however they want. I’m the last guy in the world to tell a hot chick to put on some more clothing. I don’t give a shit about modesty or anything like that.
It’s just that…
Smelling the way she does, and then looking like that…
Guys here are gonna notice her.
And I’m gonna have to watch them noticing her.
And maybe she’ll decide she likes one of them.
And then, I’m gonna have to watch that, too. And all my brothers will know my wife is stepping out on me.
My wife.
My throat tightens.
“Why do you want to be here anyway?” I rasp. “This is my turf. Not yours.”
She shrugs. “The women asked me to come. I didn’t want to be rude.”
“What? What the fuck were you doing talking to them anyway?”
