I turn on my heel and walk away. Behind me, the women’s voices start to rise. Seconds later, there’s a shriek. I spin around to see Sassy shove Rory in the chest.

Rory staggers backward, then regains her balance and charges at Sassy.

“Holy shit! Cat fight!” Mensa’s voice shouts from the crowd.

Sassy tries to take a swing at Rory, but Rory dodges the hit and grabs her by the hair. Sassy screams as Rory yanks downward, bringing her to her knees. Blindly, Sassy flings a leg out, catching Rory’s feet and kicking them out from under her. But Rory manages to spin as she falls, letting go of Sassy’s hair only to pin her to the ground as she lands on top of her. Rory grabs both of Sassy’s wrists as Sassy starts to scream and try to buck her off.

“Goddamnit!” I roar. “Knock this shit off! Matthias, help me out here!”

I grab Rory and pull her off Sassy, and Matthias hauls Sassy up to her feet and restrains her.

“You fucking bitch!” Sassy yells, trying to lunge for Rory.

“Knock it off, Sass!” I shout at her, loud enough that she knows I mean business. She stops struggling against Matthias and glares at me.

Rory shrugs me off and shoots Sassy a warning glare. “You better tell your whore to stay away from me, Rogue. I don’t start fights, but you best believe I know how to finish them.”

Rory shoots me a look of disgust, then rolls her eyes and turns away. I watch as she walks back toward Eden, Tori, and the other old ladies.

I round on Sassy. “What the fuck did you think you were gonna accomplish with that shit?”

“Me? I ain’t the one with the problem here!” she protests, looking to Toni and Candy for support. “That uptight bitch needed to be taught a lesson! She thinks her shit don’t stink. She ain’t all that! She just thinks she’s important because the old ladies like her. She ain’t been around the club. She hasn’t done shit for the Lords!” Angry tears spring to her eyes. “I’ve been here the whole time! I’ve done anything you wanted me to!”

“You knew the score from the beginning, Sassy. I never led you on. You were good for a fuck or two, but I’m sick of your shit. We’re done, you get it?”

“But…”

“I mean it, Sassy. You’re a club girl. You ain’t old lady material. Last goddamn thing I need is problematic pussy. You’ ain’t worth it.”

Sassy yells my name a few times as I walk away. She also yells a bunch of shit at me that’s meant to get me to get mad and come back to argue with her. Hit her, maybe. She’s the kind of chick who mistakes any attention for good attention. But ain’t no way I’d ever do that. She was a decent lay, but nothing beyond that. I’m hoping I don’t regret fucking her.

Next hour or two, I spend ignoring Sassy — who’s crawling all over any man who’ll give her the time of day, doing everything she can to make me jealous — and trying to ignore Rory. It takes me a few more beers to manage the latter, but I’m doing okay after a while, to the point where I lose track of where she is in the crowd.

Until, that is, I see her sitting on the knee of one of the Wretched Souls.

RORY

“Ican have Axel kick her out if you want,” Eden tells me, crossing her arms.

“No,” I sigh. “I don’t want to cause any more commotion. I just want that bitch to stay away from me. All I was doing was talking to Rogue. She didn’t even know that I’m married to him. She was just pissed that I was anywhere near him.”

“Sassy’s a pain in the ass,” Bailey grumbles. “She’s always wanted to be an old lady. She’s had her sights set on Rogue forever. She’s pissed whenever another woman gets any of his attention.”

“Well, if she is any good at reading body language,” Laney says, “she probably picked up that Rogue is into you. No wonder she went crazy jealous.”

“He’s not, though,” I protest. Though he did say I smelled good. The way he said it made my stomach do a little flip-flop of hope — like maybe a tiny part of him actuallywasstill attracted to me, in spite of all the bad history between us.

But then that bitch Sassy came swaying up to us like she owned him…

“What’s the deal with that Sassy chick, anyway?” I ask the wives, trying to keep the jealousy out of my voice. “What’s her relationship to the club.”

“Psh,” Tori replies, waving a dismissive hand. “She’s just a club girl. And not a nice one, either.” At my puzzled expression, she explains. “So, think of club girls like band groupies. They hang around the club, basically to do sexual favors for any of them who want it, whenever they want it. Sassy’s dream has always been to land one of Lords and get him to claim her.”

“Claimher?” All this club jargon is so weird.

“Yeah,” Laney interjects. “Once a biker claims a woman, she becomes his old lady. They’re permanent. Together forever, legally married or not. We’re old ladies.” She makes a circle with her finger, indicating the group. “Sassy wants to be one. Which is why she hangs around Rogue like a lovesick puppy. But she never will be.”
