I’ve done my best over the years to forget about the future I could have had with him. The life we always wanted. But sitting her in his bed, it all comes rushing back to me, and the sorrow is almost too much to bear. A strangled sound emerges from my throat, and I have to swallow it down so I don’t burst into tears.

I need to get out of here. I should never have come. I shouldn’t have let Tori and the other old ladies talk me into it. I’ve just ruined more things for Brody all over again.

I slide out of bed, find my clothes, and dress hastily. Dogzilla follows behind me as I walk through the living room. He must think we’re going on a walk or something.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper, patting him on the head one last time. “Rogue will be back soon. Thanks for keeping me company.”

There’s a note pad on the kitchen island. I pull it toward me and write Rogue a note, apologizing for the trouble I caused. Outside, I walk down the main road back toward the clubhouse and the parking area where my car is. The whole time, my heart is pounding, afraid I’ll be stopped by one of the Lords, but no one is around. They’re all still in church, I guess.

My car starts without trouble for once. I steer it down the driveway toward the exit, and get a jolt of adrenaline when I see there’s someone standing guard at the gate. Two someones, to be exact: a couple of the men I saw during the party wearing leather cuts that readprospect. I prepare to slow down, but I guess because I’m leaving instead of trying to get in, they wave me right through.

“Nice of you to join us,” Axel says drily when I walk into the chapel.

“I was takin’ care of Rory.” I know Axel’s my prez, but I don’t feel like apologizing.

Matthias coughs out a laugh. “How many times did you ‘take care’ of her?”

“Fuck off, brother,” I toss back.

“Okay, we’re all here.” Axel cuts us off, banging the gavel. “Let’s debrief.”

Most of what the men say is shit I already figured out. After I got Rory out of there, shit started to go south. A couple of fist fights broke out, but Axel and Rourke managed to keep shit under control until the Wretched Souls finally left.

“Wrecker was pissed because he kept sayin’ Rory isn’t claimed, so as far as he’s concerned, she was fair game,” Rourke tells me.

“We’re fuckin’ married!” I explode.

Next to me, Mal snorts. “Oh, sonowyou’re married to her?”

“Goddamnit,” I seethe.

“Wrecker was yellin’ that we shoulda given Rory to him, as a goodwill thing,” Rourke continues with a sneer. “Didn’t matter that we told him Rory wasn’t a club whore.”

“Also, that chick who attacked Rory?” Gage adds. “That’s Wrecker’s old lady. So she’s pissed as hell, too. She was so fuckin’ wild, Wrecker had to hall her out of here over his shoulder. She was beatin’ on him, trying to kick and bite him… the whole works.”

Laughter erupts around the table but it doesn’t last long.

“Shit,” I mutter.

“Yeah, shit is right.” Rourke’s jaw tenses. “Now Wrecker’s demanding that we give him a woman.”

“What? What the fuck does that mean?”

He’s sayin’ that if we want to make things right, we’ll send him one of our club bitches. As a gift.”

“Are we gonna do that?” Matthias asks. “We could give him —”

“No!” Axel shouts, cutting him off. “We don’t do that. Not even a club girl. They’re here with our club of their own free will. Sending one of them to the Souls is slavery.”

“Then what are we gonna do?” I ask.

“You shoulda thought of that before all this shit went down.” Axel stares daggers at me. “What the fuck were you doing, bringing that girl in here, when she doesn’t know the first thing about how an MC works?”

“I didn’t bring her here!” My voice rises. “I didn’t even know she was coming until she showed up.”
