I stalk over to the booth where she’s just seated herself. Aurora is pulling the napkin out from under the silverware and placing it on her lap, with slow, exaggerated movements. I slide into the booth across from her before she can say no.

Startled, she locks eyes with me.

“I expect an answer, Aurora,” I rasp. “What the fuck are you doing in town?”

“I don’t owe you anything,” she shoots back.

“There ain’t enough hours in the day to list all the ways you owe me.”

She squares her jaw. “I don’t respond to orders.”

“Answer me.”

“No.”

As mad as I am, I have to stifle a laugh. Shit, this girl always was stubborn as hell.

I used to think it was cute. Sexy, even. Now it makes me want to punch a damn wall.

“Aurora,” I bite out, clenching my teeth and hating myself. “Will youpleasetell me what you are doing in Ironwood?”

Do I imagine a corner of her mouth lifting in triumph?

“I go by Rory now,” she replies.

Jessie comes over and sets two menus on the table. Her eyes jump between us with obvious curiosity.

“I ain’t eating,” I growl.

Jessie frowns at me. “You want something to drink?”

“Beer.” I cross my arms in front of my chest. “Usual.”

Jessie lets out a soft snort through her nose. “Someone pissed in your Cheerios today, I see.”

I cut my eyes at her.

“Can I just get an order of fries?” Aurora asks, and gives Jessie a sweet, simpering smile.

“Sure thing, honey.” Jessie smiles back at her, then turns away, taking the menus with her.

Aurora follows Jessie with her eyes, then turns to me reluctantly. “Are you really just going to… sit there and not say anything?” she asks, waving her hand at me.

“Until I get an answer to my question.”

“Brody…” she begins in a frustrated voice, then sighs. “Ugh. I’m only here temporarily, okay? I’m not moving back to Ironwood.”

“How long?”

“What?”

“When are you leaving?” I demand. “Better be soon.”

“Look, it’s not like I came here with the sole purpose of pissing you off.”

“I wouldn’t put it past you.”

She gives me an exasperated glare. “I didn’t even know you were still in town.”
