“Rory. I mean it. Don’t worry about the club. We’ll be fine. The Lords take care of our own. We’ll deal with the consequences. I won’t have you freaking out about that. Promise me.”

I know arguing won’t do any good. And I’m so tired.

I just decide to let it go.

“How did you find me?” I lean back against the seat and close my eyes.

“I went to your house. Needed to talk to you. Hans and Gina said you went out for a run and didn’t come back. No one knew where you were. I was out of ideas when I somehow got the idea to call your mom. She had that phone tracker app on her phone for you.”

“My mom? You talked to my mom?”

“I didn’t want to.” Brody flashes me a contrite look. “Didn’t want to worry her. But I had no choice. Good damn thing I did, too.”

I reach for the pocket of my yoga pants, where my cell should be. It’s not there.

“I don’t have it, though.” I frown in confusion.

“Well, it led you right to us, so it was in the car.”

I think back to when they knocked me unconscious. Maybe they took it off me but didn’t get rid of it?

The realization that my abductors might have led Brody and the Lords right to them hits me, and suddenly, I’m overwhelmed by the absurdity of it all. I start to laugh and cry at the same time.

“Babe?” Brody says, alarmed.

“It’s — I’m okay,” I gasp, holding my sides against the pain of my laughter. “It’s just… a lot to process.”

He gives me a concerned frown. “You need to rest now. Enough talk until we get to the hospital. I can’t have you exhausting yourself.”

“Is that an order?” I say weakly.

“It would be, if you ever listened to a damn thing I said.”

But then, I feel the soft brush of his hand against my cut cheek.

“Please,” he says gently. “For me.”

I consider his words.

“Brody Hicks,” I murmur, “I would do anything for you. All you had to do was ask.”

ROGUE

Idrive like a bat outta hell back to Ironwood and get Rory to the hospital. On the way, I call Laney. She meets us at check-in and promises to make sure questions about what happened to Rory are kept to a minimum, so the cops don’t get involved.

As they wheel Rory away, I tell her I’ll be back as soon as I can. I make Laney promise to call me with any news about Rory’s condition. Then I take off for the clubhouse.

Axel and Rourke meet me there. I tell them what happened, and who’s responsible for kidnapping Rory.

In the chapel, with me there, Axel calls the prez of the Wretched Souls. He tells Leadbelly what happened — that Wrecker’s old lady enlisted one of our club whores to kidnap one of our old ladies.

“There’s about to be a one hell of a war between our clubs, Leadbelly,” Axel bites out, anger snapping from him like an electrical current. “Unless you figure out a way to make this shit right. Meantime, my men shot the guys who were with them. Didn’t shoot the women, because we don’t do that shit. Now they’re yours to deal with. We dumped the bodies and the women across the state line in Kentucky. Go pick up your garbage.”

He slams the phone down and just stops short of hurling it across the chapel. He turns to me.

“Go see your woman,” he tells me.
