Mack and Reed already know the basics, but they listen with the rest of them. “So, Hooch has been threatening her, and her brother Quad is pissed that she’s not just falling into Hooch’s arms like a good little obedient sister,” I sneer. “After I showed up with Kat at her apartment and Hooch was there, I’m thinking this is about to blow up bigger than just us.” I look around the room. “I think we need to be prepared for the Eagle's Talon to be coming for her. And maybe for us.”

“I think it’s probably bigger than that,” Elmo pipes up.

All heads turn toward him.

“What do you mean, brother?”

“Fury asked me to dig up some intel on Quad and Hooch.” Elmo shoots a look at Magnus. “We all know the Eagle’s Talon are running drugs for the Bloody Scorpions. And from what I can gather, it looks like the Scorpions are working with the Cártel de Sinaloa.”

There are a few grunts and murmurs around the table. This ain’t a surprise to any of us.

Elmo continues. “The rivalry between our club and the Eagle’s Talon has gone down to a simmer the last few years, but this thing with Fury and Kat has a high potential to turn the heat back up and reignite it. And this guy Hooch? He just got patched over to the Bloody Scorpions. And from what I hear, Quad is wanting to get patched over to them, too. He’s looking for Hooch to be his sponsor.”

Mack speaks up. “Sounds to me like that’s why Quad’s so eager to get Kat hooked up with Hooch. A little present to sweeten the pot.”

“Jesus fuck,” I seethe. If this is true, then Quad’s not likely to give up without one hell of a fight. And Hooch won’t either. This really does have the potential to blow us all sky high.

“Fury.”

I’m pulled out of my thoughts by Magnus’s deep voice. “Prez?”

“What’s the story with you and this girl?” He leans forward. “She just a good time to you, or something more?”

“She’s mine,” I say firmly. “She’s my woman. She’s it for me.”

Next to Magnus, Norse cocks his head at me. “You claimin’ her?” he asks.

“You’re damn right I am.”

Magnus nods. “So, she’s one of ours, then.” It’s not a question.

“That’s right.”

He bangs the gavel loudly. “Okay.” He looks around the table, meeting everyone’s eyes, brother by brother. “We do whatever it takes to protect Kat. Elmo, get to work on tracking Quad and Hooch. I want eyes on their every goddamn movement. Anywhere they go, anything they do, we know about it. You got me?”

“Got it, Prez.”

“Right now, the Eagle’s Talon MC is our main target. The best way to deal with this is to cripple them before they have a chance to attack us. I need men on the ground to follow their officers and anyone who spends time with Hooch or Quad.”

The men around the table volunteer so fast that Magnus has more than enough men to pick from. When he’s finished, he grunts his approval. “Report back to me with any information that could be useful.”

As I walk out of the chapel, one thing is ringing through my mind. Not one of those men — not my prez, not anyone — told me to walk away from Kat.

Back out in the main room, I hear Kat’s laughter before I see her. I follow her voice to the kitchen, where I left her before church. The club bunnies aren’t in there with her — in fact, they’re nowhere to be seen. Instead, she and Choppa’s old lady Reenie are at the kitchen table, laughing it up over cups of coffee.

“Well, hello there, stranger!” Reenie calls out when she sees me. She sets down her mug and stands. “Come on in here and let me take a look at you.”

I step into Reenie’s warm embrace. There’s no denying this woman a hug if she wants one. You may as well just give it up.

“Good to see you, Reen.” I glance down at Kat, who looks happy and carefree — a total transformation from when we first arrived. “Looks like the two of you are playing catch-up.”

“Oh, this girl is a sight for sore eyes.” Reenie beams. “I always hoped you two would find your way back to each other.”

Choppa comes up behind his wife. “Guess this boy finally pulled his head out of his ass,” he says, nodding toward me. “Kat, I ain’t sure why you decided to give him another chance, but I’m sure glad you did.”

Kat gives Choppa a radiant smile. “Wow, it’s so crazy to see everyone again. It almost feels like no time has passed.”

“Plenty of time has passed,” I correct her, slipping an arm around her waist. “Like Choppa said, just enough time for me to pull my head out of my ass and not let you get away a second time.”
