Alex kissed her back. “I’d tell them I was too busy.”

“No need. The FD rep who talked to us said they had plenty of options from MetroGen and the CCFD. The Gupta-Carvers already said no. I saw their list of possibilities. I think they’re going after people who left FD long ago. Any idea who Mr. and Mrs. Rafe Falcon are?”

Chapter 19

Kayla stopped breathing. Eliza had said the name of They-Who-Could-Not-Be-Named.

Kayla, and Kayla alone, recognized that name. Daniel’s ex-wife had remarried a firefighter, Rafe Falcon. It was she and Rafe who had primary custody of Jenna, not Daniel.

Daniel’s face changed to an interesting shade of purple.

Luckily, before he could explode, there was a sharp bark from somewhere in the kitchen.

Angela was on her feet in a flash. She didn’t get far beyond rounding the counter before letting out a horrified shriek.

“Oh no. Taussig just gave birth to puppies on your floor, in a nest of towels.”

Michael sprang to his feet. “Isn’t Taussig fixed?”

“She’s supposed to be, but the ex was in charge of it...” Angela was even redder than before. “I’ve never left her alone with any dogs...”

Eliza’s hand raised. “Um, the kids took her to the dog park a few months ago. She got… umm… affection.”

“Who’d have thought in a house like yours?” Daniel snarled.

Kayla’s sister pivoted, her face a storm cloud, Marcus’s arm doing nothing to restrain her. “Something you want to say to me now?”

“Why should I? Because it’s obvious what type of people you hang out with.”

“Pray tell which ‘type’ of people I hang out with. My sister, your girlfriend. Your dead best friend’s cousin?”

“If the humans can’t control themselves when they go into heat here, I can’t blame the dog.”

Now Eliza was on her feet, murder in her eyes. “Oh, you want to play this game, Mr. Glass House? Apologize now, Steadman, or you will not like the next part.”

“Brr. I’m scared. It’s about time someone fucking called you out. Stella sleeps with three guys and isn’t sure who the dad of her baby is. Was that bad enough? No, Eliza, why don’t you go ahead and date one of them? At least I didn’t have to sign your permission slip since he’s an attending, unlike the derm resident you screwed last year.”

“None of this is your business.”

“It’s not? I’m dating your sister, who helped me cheat on my ex-wife and lost my best chance for custody. Who am I to stop you? Perkins slept with a medical student and had to marry him or get fired. I’m sure their love is eternal. Tell me what Scott would say after he’s done fucking rolling over in his grave.”

Elizabeth was the color of paper, and her eyes were watering. “Scott would have found it hilarious. The hospital sex whammy is messy. Life is messy. Love is messy.”

“You made your slutty bed, and you can sleep in it. You should be glad Scott’s not here to see it.”

“Take that back.”

Daniel was on his feet too, and he sneered at the single tear running down Eliza’s cheek. “Buck up. There’s no crying in surgery.”

As Eliza brushed the tear off her face, something inside Kayla ripped free.

“You need to leave.” Kayla pointed to the door, having gotten up at some point, like she was having anout-of-body experience. “I want you to leave. NOW!”

He snorted. “I should have expected this from you. Of course.”

“Shut up. I felt guilty enough when you cheated on Jessica. I helped you for two years. I stood by you through thick and thin when you alienated everyone around you. I did my penance, but NOBODY makes my sister cry.”

Daniel frowned. “You signed an NDA.”
