“Was that what woke you up?”

She shook her head.

“No, that happened earlier. I woke up to drink some water, and he was screaming.”

I leaned forward in surprise.

“Like someone was hurting him?”

“No. Like he was angry at someone. He kept saying it’s all your fault. You made me do it.”

Sona and I exchanged surprised glances. Was there was someone else in the flat that night?

“Who was he talking to?”

Sia shrugged.

“I don’t know. Maybe he was talking to himself. He did that sometimes. I saw him doing that on the stairs once, and it was scary.”

I slumped back in disappointment.

He talked to himself. That meant he might have had auditory hallucinations. He must have been mentally ill.

I patted Sia on the cheek and thanked her for telling us the secret.

“We won’t tell anyone,” I whispered.

I turned around and nearly shrieked as I found myself nose-to-nose with DV. And a visibly angry DV, at that.

“What the fuck do you think you’re playing at?” he roared.

“Language,” I snapped, nodding towards Sia.

DV took in a deep breath, and I saw a muscle in his cheek jump as he tried to control his temper. He forced a smile at Sia, who melted at the sight of that lop-sided smile like so many susceptible females before her.

“Wanna hear a secret?” she asked conspiratorially. “It’ll cost you, though.”

“No, thank you. I’ll share it with him,” I said firmly, as I drew DV away.

He pulled his arm away from mine as soon as we were out of her sight. When we got to the van, I saw Sona leaning against the side, looking sheepish while Samar paced in front of her, no doubt yelling at her for our escapade.

“Listen, before you yell at me…” I began, but DV cut me off.

He grabbed me by the hand and swung me up close to him.

“You listen to me. I don’t know what the fuck you were thinking when you decided to treat this like one of your adventures, but it fucking stops now,” he growled.

“Excuseme? This wasn’t an adventure for me, DV. This was me trying to make some sense of what is happening to my life.Mine! Not yours or Samar’s. Who the hell do you think you are to take over my life and tell me what to do?”

“I’m the guy who’s trying to keep you alive,” he roared.

“Can you stop being dramatic for one minute?” I asked exasperatedly.

DV took in another deep breath that did nothing to calm him down before he met my eyes squarely.

“We just spoke to the medical officer who conducted a detailed post-mortem on Vishal Agarwal. He didn’t kill himself, Tasha. He was murdered.”
