“Is there a problem?”

I cleared my throat and blew out a breath.

“No, there’s no problem. As such. It’s just that it was just a… one-night stand. And you promised me you wouldn’t tell anyone,” I hissed at DV, for effect.

He smiled at me nastily.

“Inspector Sawant isn’t just anyone, babe. We have to tell him the truth,” he retorted, with a glint in his eyes.

“Fine,” I huffed. “We spent the night together, Inspector, but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t mention that to anyone.”

“It will be our secret,” said the Inspector sarcastically.

After that, he grilled DV about his whereabouts the next day when Samar’s team broke into Vishal’s house and found his body. The good thing was that there were at least ten witnesses when they broke open that door. When he hadn’t opened the door to their knock, they had spoken to the neighbours, who had gathered around to see them break and enter. He couldn’t pin the murder on them, and neither could he pin it on us now.

By the time he finished questioning us, Inspector Sawant was not a happy bunny. He warned us that he’d be back for follow-up questions a little later, and looked very grumpy when he strode out of my cottage.

I waited until his car drove away before I turned to DV and whacked him with a fluffy cushion.

“Why did you tell him that we were together? You lied to the cops, DV. You! Mr Stick-up-his-tight-butt!”

He smiled at the back-handed compliment.

“My tight butt thanks you for noticing. And in case you’ve forgotten, I used to be a spy, Tasha. I’m no stranger to lying my way out of a tight situation.”

“But lying to the cops is dangerous, DV,” I reminded him.

“Tasha, did you kill Vishal?”

“Of course not!”

I was upset he even had to ask.

“Do you think I killed him?”

“No way!”

I’d stake my life on that.

“Then where is the risk if we told a small lie to give ourselves an alibi? It’s not like he can prove us wrong. We did spend the night inside the commune, only in separate beds instead of the same one.”

“So you lied only to give yourself an alibi?” I couldn’t help but ask.

I knew it was max cringe, but I wanted to know how far he would go for my sake.

“I will do whatever it takes to protect you, Tasha. Even if it means lying to the whole world. Let me put it this way. If you did kill someone - for whatever reason - I’d be right behind you with a shovel, helping to bury the body.”

“But… why?” I whispered.

“Because somehow, you have managed to wind yourself around my very soul, until all I can think about is you. It doesn’t matter if we’re not engaged anymore, you’re still the axis that my world revolves around,” he replied.

I choked back a sob because if I gave in to my tears now, I wouldn’t stop crying. It felt like I had been waiting for these words all my life.

“Say something, Tasha! I just bared my soul to you. Don’t just stand there! Tell me if you feel the same,” he said harshly.

For once in my life, I was out of words. So, I decided to let my actions speak for me. I threw myself into DV’s arms.

He grabbed me as I wound my arms around his neck and kissed me fiercely. He held on to me as if he was adrift at sea, and I was the only thing that kept him afloat. He kissed me exactly like I kissed him. Like he was the most precious thing in my life.
