“And math.”

“Oh, and don’t forget you tutored him in English studies.” Crystal jumped in and I felt my cheeks go a little red.

“Yep, I was a pretty bad student. I was too busy playing hockey to care about studying. Kim was asked to be my tutor as she was at the top of her class in everything.”

I was arrogant and didn’t care that I was failing any of my classes. Grades didn't matter, I just wanted to play sports, but she soon sorted me out. She had gleefully ripped me a new one whenever she could. When I got my first B minus I remembered her celebrating and giving me the biggest gold star sticker I had ever seen. I still had it, back at home, stuffed in a drawer somewhere with that B minus paper.

“If it wasn’t for Kim, I wouldn’t have been able to pass high school and get my scholarship. I owe it all to her really.”

She suddenly looked embarrassed, quickly excusing herself. Kim ran off with the taller girl following her to the bathroom. Turning back to the table feeling confused, I noticed Crystal and her date looked at me with a hint of anger in their eyes.

“That was also when you dumped her after promising to take her to prom,” Crystal snapped.

I hadn’t forgotten what I did. Truth was, I didn’t get to go to that prom, but that was a whole different story that I hoped to be able to tell Kimberly one day. Crystal’s date put her hand on hers and they both left the table. Clearly I have left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth.

“Don’t worry about it.” The girl with cards speaks up. “They are just overprotective of Kim, she’ll be fine. The cards tell me you have a long road ahead of you both, are you ready to share it together?”

“I’m sorry, I don’t believe in that sort of stuff.”

I didn’t. I was never someone who would be fooled by horoscopes or the universe telling you karma is real. But then again I am pretty sure karma was kicking my ass at this very moment.

“It doesn’t matter if you believe in it or not, you being here was meant to be.”

“Hmmm, we will see if Kimberly believes that. I should leave you girls for the rest of your evening, I’ve gate crashed long enough.”

Swigging back my drink and getting up to head back to my spot on the bar, I'm suddenly stopped. Crystal, her date, Kimberly and the tall one stood before me, almost in a protective circle around Kimberly and I knew it was because of me.

“Ok, we have come up with a plan of how you can make it up to Kim for ditching her that night,” Crystal said with an attitude, crossing her arms and cocking her hip.

“Go on…” I was intrigued by whatever they had planned.

Kimberly didn’t seem to be impressed, keeping her eyes on the floor, refusing to meet mine. “Girls, please just leave it.”

“No, he owes you one. So, Samuel, you will be Kim’s date to her brother’s wedding and if you screw up, we will set all hell loose upon you.”

“Wait, what!?”

Kim pulled the tall one back and looked up at her with wide eyes. I don’t think this was the plan they had suggested to her back in the bathroom. She finally looks at me then back at her friends, and I just stood there unsure of what I was supposed to say. Yes, sure, of course I’d be her date, I’d happily be her date! But I couldn’t very well say that judging by her reaction.

“Jaz, that’s not what we discussed. I just wanted an apology.”

“Yes, but now you can solve two problems.”

“My mother still wants to kill him, so I don’t think it would be a good idea.”

“Then invite him round to dinner with your parents and you guys can clear the air, but one way or another, he’s your date.”

Jasmine appeared to be the ringleader of them all and a part of me wanted to high five her. This would not only give me the chance to spend some time with Kimberly, but I’d also get to explain everything.

I would tell her why I did what I did, and why she didn’t go to prom with me. I owed her an explanation and even if it was about ten years late, but it was better late than never.

“If it’s alright with you Kim, I’m happy to help anyway I can.”

She sighed, rolling her eyes at me, and pushed past her friends. Suddenly leaving the bar, she grabbed her coat on the way out. Her friends all looked at me as if to say it was my job to go after her. Part of me wanted to, but I also felt super awkward at the thought of chasing after her. It was my being here that had caused this issue in the first place.

Puffing out a sigh, I grabbed my coat and followed her out into the cold.
