She asked as she leaned against the door frame, and I felt very exposed. The underwear I had on was no way near ‘date’ acceptable and the bra was one of those ugly comfy ones you threw on when you just needed to keep the girls strapped in.

“Eh – I’m my brother’s best man, so I guess something wedding appropriate, maybe full length? Dark green would be good.”

“I will see what I can find.”

She left then, shutting the door behind her and I stood in the middle of the room on the small round stool surrounded by mirrors. I could see every angle of my body once I stripped. Crystal may have been right with the fact I had lost weight this past year. My toned body from figure skating was slowly disappearing, perhaps I did need to eat more than one meal a day.

Soon Izabella reappeared holding three or four dresses, all different styles and different shades of green in her arms. Hanging them up one by one on a rail hooked on one of the walls, she looked at me and already I knew she was questioning what she had to work with.

“Right! Well, I thought as you are quite slim, we could try an A-Line first with a swooped illusion neckline. It has these cute ruffled capped sleeves as well.”

Pulling out a pine-colored dress, she pulled it gently over my head. I looked at it for a few seconds and instantly regretted it. The style gave me no shape and just fell flat. I could see over my shoulder Izabella felt the same as she pulled a slightly disgusted face.

“Ok, no, definitely not! This just looks like a sack of potatoes on you.”

Unzipping it and almost throwing it onto a small arm chair across the changing room, she then grabbed the next dress. This time it was in a peacock green shade, with spaghetti straps, a cowl neckline, and a V-shaped back.

“This one is better, but I don’t like this shape on you. It does nothing for you. Hang on, I have an idea.”

Leaving me standing in the second dress, she left the room. While she was gone I eyed the remaining two dresses she had left hanging up, all similar in style as the previous two.

She returned holding the dress over her shoulder, trying to clearly hide it from me. Smiling a little, I turned away so she could hang it up and then unzip me from the dress she’d left me in.

“Now, I know you said green, but Mr. Jones just mentioned this is for a Christmas themed wedding. We aren’t meant to be showing this collection till next week, but I have this feeling that this might be the perfect dress.”

Lifting the dress off the hanger then slowly she slipped it over my head. The soft feather-like fabric brushed against my skin as it fell into place. Izabella stood in front of me, blocking my view in the mirror, and adjusted the sleeves then pulled the dress down to sit perfectly on my hips before taking my hair out of its bun and shaking it a little over my shoulders, then she stepped out of my view.

I couldn’t quite comprehend that I was looking at myself in the mirror, this dreamy, romantic, velvet, dark red dress fitted my body perfectly, giving off ethereal vibes. It hung just off-the-shoulder with capped sleeves resting just below my shoulders and the neckline cut into a sweetheart. Looking down, I saw the slit run up just above my knee and although it looked a little revealing, I was already in love.

“It also has pockets and what girl doesn’t love a dress with pockets,” Izabella commented as she stood beside me. “Now this, this is the dress. Shall we go show Mr. Jones?”

“Oh um – Sure, only thing it’s a little long.”

“Nothing a pair of heels won’t fix, what size shoe are you? I will go grab you a pair now.”

“Eh, five.”

Off she disappeared for hopefully the last time, then returned holding a pair of black Jimmy Choo pumps in suede. I didn’t dare ask for the price of anything as I knew there was no way I could afford any of it. I had originally thought I’d head to the local dress shop in town or look online for a second-hand dress that would work. Instead, here I stood in an expensive store wearing a dress that felt like magic.

Heading back towards Sam, who was sitting in the waiting area drinking a cup of coffee and stuffing his face with cookies, I felt nervous and a bit sick. I couldn't help but wonder if this was over doing it. I didn’t want to upstage the bride.

“Wow. Holy crap, Kimmy!”

He sat there, shock written all over his face and I felt a blush rush to my cheeks. The last time anyone looked at me like that was Luke. I had to lower my eyes feeling some second-hand embarrassment.

“Izabella, look at her. Yep, that’s the one, right?”

He stood up taking me all in as I stood on the floor stool and stared at myself in the mirror. I felt worried then that Bethan wouldn’t be too happy with me and wondered if I should send her a photograph as I was sure she mentioned her sisters were going to be her bridesmaids and maybe we should all match.

“I don’t know, Sam, it’s a beautiful dress, but Bethan, my brother’s fiancée might get upset. I don’t even know what the bridesmaids are wearing.”

“Sorry, but aren’t you your brother’s best man?” He stood next to me looking at me in the mirror.

“Yes.”

“Then if you’re worried, call your brother and see what he thinks, but honestly, we aren’t leaving this store without this dress.”

“I can’t afford something like this.”
