“Well, that’s not okay!” I shouted again and Sam chuckled a little. “We MUST find a store… FAST! Right… now!”

“Okay, and why do we need to do that?”

“Snacks and… beer!”

He was choking back an even bigger laugh as I let go of his arm. I had started walking with determination, even though I had absolutely no idea where I was going. Catching up to me then, Sam wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me back, spinning me in the process causing me to slam into his chest.

“Sor – Sorry.”

“It’s alright. Maybe we can order room service instead.”

Pulling out his phone as he held me closely, one hand started to idly rub my back. I was painfully aware of that one hand, even if it only gently touched on my lower back. Rocking a little back and forth, the floor beneath my feet was shaking a little. It didn’t deter him as he kept hold of me and seemed to be looking at his sat nav.

“It’s up this way. Come on.”

Guiding me then, we walked what felt like forever in the brisk fall air. As we crossed a street or two, we went down a few pathways until we reached the hotel, and he never took his arm away from my waist.

CHAPTER 11

Samuel

Kim looked just as beautiful as she did the day we met. She walked into bio class and was told to sit next to me. The new girl.

The hotel only had two choices of rooms left as a wedding had booked out many of the rooms. One was a single occupant room and the other a double, family size.

Kimberly’s eyes almost lit up when they mentioned the one double. I wasn’t sure if it was my imagination, but she seemed slightly excited, or maybe it was just the drink that made me think otherwise.

“So, we will head up, freshen up and do you fancy going down to the bar for a few more drinks? The night is still young.”

Please say yes, please say yes.

“Sure! But what are we freshening up for? Not like we have a change of clothes.”

“Ah, that’s very true. Alright, so bar now?”

She nodded with enthusiasm and headed off in the direction of the bar. Or was it the bar? I had no idea, but we followed the signs and directions. Passing the function room door, Kim couldn’t help herself as she popped her head inside to see the happy newlyweds taking their first dance. I wasn’t sure if I saw a hint of sadness on her face or tears of joy as she watched on.

“Come on. We aren’t meant to be here.”

Pulling her away, she looped her arm back into mine and I caught a whiff of her fading perfume, floral but subtle. She really could have worn a trash bag, and I still would have gone a little weak at the knees. She was stunning, and I hoped she knew that.

“Right, you sit there, and I will get us a drink or two.”

“Or three!! Or a pitcher!!”

She raised her voice over the faint music and a few of the guests stared at her and rolled their eyes. I was hoping no one watched any hockey or at least didn’t recognize me while we were here.

“What can I get ya?”

The bartender looked like he belonged in the wedding judging by how smartly dressed he was.

“Eh, your best beer on tap and for my lady friend, a strawberry daiquiri.”

“Righto!”

Off the bartender went and I tried to keep my eye on Kimberly as she fiddled with the menus and tapped her feet. She would do that when we would go out for food. Always in another part of town so no one would see us together. Lowering my eyes, the shame of it all fell over me. I was never ashamed of being with her. I just knew if some of my friends saw I was with her, we would have got grief. They would have ensured I had treated her poorly in front of everyone.

But then again, I didn’t treat her very well even when we were in school, and no one was watching us. I was such an asshole back then, no wonder she was apprehensive to really be around me, maybe she was just being polite now.
