“I’m going to take that one home tonight, girls, I’m telling you, tonight is the night. I'm getting him back.”

“Aha, Stace, good luck with that, you know Sam will just say no again.”

My ears perked up as I listened in closely to the girls in front of me having a conversation, clearly unbothered that everyone could hear them.

“Nope, not tonight, he’s having me all to himself.”

“Best of luck, hun, I heard his new girlfriend is here.”

“Ha! I will take her out of the game easily, I know what he likes and she most certainly can’t keep his attention.”

My blood began to boil a little as I heard them begin talking about me. Katelyn had lowered her phone and was listening as well. Both of us gave each other the side eye as she shook her head, mouthing ‘no’. Clearly she knew I wanted to say something. Even if I wasn’t really Sam’s girlfriend, I still couldn’t continue hearing them talk about my friend. Especially not as if he was a piece of meat. If this was the other way round and a guy was talking about a girl this way, there would be hell to pay.

Leaning forward, they both turned as they sensed me there and the one girl's eyes widened as she noticed me sitting there, where the one named ‘Stace’ seemed oblivious.

“I think you will find; we don’t sleep when I am entertaining him.”

A wide smile crept up as I looked at them both, Stace finally realizing who I was, and a flash of red went down her neck. Her friend lowered her eyes instantly and went to turn away, but Stace didn’t seem to want to back down.

“You are just his flavor of the week, he will tire of you and come running back to me.”

“I’m sorry, who are you? Are you some groupie or something?” I taunted, having none of it. “Because I know he’s never called your name out when we fuck.”

Katelyn and Matthew bit back a laugh from beside me and the other girls started to turn around slowly, each listening closely. Stace started to stand up from her seat, trying to look intimidating and something inside me was ready to snap.

“Who the hell do you think you are?!” She shouted at me, and I laughed a little.

“Could you sit down please, I’m trying to watch my boyfriend play.”

The tension could be cut like a knife, and I wanted desperately to knock her down a few pegs. She was clearly not used to not getting her way. But even if Sam and I were only fake dating, the idea of some random girl having him in her bed made me uncontrollably angry.

Her friend started to pull her down by the wrist and she fought her friend, the redness in her neck now traveling up to her face. I would have quite easily continued if it wasn’t for the goal buzzer going off. The entire crowd roared together as Sam’s team scored another goal.

So far, the match had been even, until Sam scored that perfect goal it seemed. I didn’t really think about anything else other than getting up to begin shouting and clapping.

It seemed he caught sight of me then as the third intermission buzz went off. Without even missing a beat, I left my seat to rush down to one of the side rink doors as Sam skated towards it. One of the rink marshals opened it as we both reached it at the same time. He dropped his hockey stick and wrapped one strong arm around my waist, lifting me up into a tight embrace.

I didn’t care that there were hundreds of people watching or that there were many cameras flashing and clicking around us as he hugged me tightly. My arms wrapped around his neck as I buried my face into his shoulder.

“How are you even here right now?!”

He shouted over the crowd as he lowered me down. The cold instantly biting into me as he let go of me. I became very aware of how much I wanted to be back in his arms.

“And don’t you look hot in my number.”

He winked with a coy smile. If it wasn’t for the many people watching us, I would have kissed him as my emotions were running high.

“Katelyn thought it would be a nice surprise for you.”

“It’s a very nice surprise. I’m sorry I didn’t come back to town after the hotel.”

“Don’t worry about that, you just go back in there and win this game. We can talk about it later.”

“We will be celebrating later that’s for sure.”

Taking a hold of my hand, he kissed it gently before turning on his skates. My eyes were glued to his back as he headed across the rink to the entrance of the changing rooms. His team was waiting on the sidelines, all shouting and wolf whistling at him as he joined them.

My heart skipped a beat as the heat in me rose. What did he mean by celebrating? I let my mind wander a little wondering if that meant we were going to celebrate just the two of us or did that mean I’d be meeting the rest of his team. Either way, I felt strangely relaxed now I was near him.
