We had secured ten hockey teams and many multimillion-dollar companions who had offered to sponsor the young hockey players and ice skaters. We had got lucky with a few of them, mostly businesses looking to advertise their brand on uniforms.

Olivia, the newscaster, had also told Paula and the others the special feature her channel had been working on would be going live this Wednesday. I looked forward to seeing it, knowing it featured Kim.

“Once you’re done Sam, wanna hit a bar for a few?” Jason asked, looking rather hopeful.

“Maybe dude, will text you.”

Honestly, a few drinks with the boys would help clear my head and help break up the days as Friday was going to take a long time to arrive, unless I kept myself busy.

Wednesday evening.

Joe and I are going out drinking tonight, a late stag kinda thing, few of his army buddies are coming as well.

Kim and I had been back and forth texting all day as she finished up her brother’s wedding things as well as working back at the rink getting her girls prepped for their competition.

Each day so far had been filled with gym, tv appearances, meeting up with the boys then sitting at my apartment flicking through the television channels, waiting for Kim to message me back.

I didn’t realize how crappy and routine my life had become until I was back sitting on my couch. I didn’t even have a dog around to keep me company. Katelyn had opted to stay with Kim as she had bits to do with the charity event and Kim had been kind enough to let her sleep in the guest bedroom of her house.

From the outside, her house seemed huge, and I had to stop myself many times from asking what Luke did for them to own a home like that. I didn’t really like talking about him, the memory of him made Kim sad. Even though I knew we both moved on previously and had a past, it made me a little jealous he had spent so many years with her.

Whereas my stupidity and cowards made me lose out. I would make up for it one way or another.

Army buddies?

Don’t worry about them honestly, I used to babysit one of them and the others are all married. Joe is the last one to get hitched, so they had to come.’

Oh, I’m not worried, I know you’d kick some guys ass if he tried anything.

I feel sorry for the guys having to keep up with you.

It will be a fun night. Joe is excited. He can’t wait to marry Beth, he has been at mine all day.

He’s asked me a lot of questions about you. Mom started speaking to me today as well, she’s still mad you haven’t been round for dinner before the wedding.

I had forgotten I had agreed to have dinner with Kim’s family before the wedding, it was the right thing to do and now the wedding was going to be here on Saturday. As the conversation went quiet, more so on my end as I had an idea and one, I hoped I’d be able to work. Looking for Paula’s number, it took a few rings before she finally answered me and didn’t seem at all impressed by the late call.

“What? It’s late.”

“Sorry, eh, any chance we can push tomorrow’s meetings and we maybe move them to next week.”

“And why should we do that?”

“Well, eh, as we speak, I’ve rebooked my flight back to Merrifort a day early.”

I pulled my phone back from my ear and waited for the eruption of shouting and screaming that I was used to from Paula. There wasn’t any. She was quiet for once. Maybe preparing to boil.

“Alright, I had a feeling you were going to do this anyway, so I moved the meetings already. What time is your flight?”

“Okay, where is Paula and what have you done with her?”

I was surprised how she didn’t question me. Normally I was used to her telling me where I was going, and what I was doing. She would pretty much plan my entire life month by month. She hated rain checking or changing things.

“I’m not your mother, Sam. You can go and do as you please. Katelyn had already asked for me to come a day early and I assumed if I was going early, you’d want to come too. Clearly, I was right.”

“You do know me the best.”
