Looking at her, she stared at me with tenderness in her eyes and placed a hand on my leg. I placed my hand over hers and squeezed a little.

“I will be at your side for as long as you want me to be. I am here to stay.”

She didn’t have to say any more than that, I knew what it meant. Picking her up to sit on my lap, I carried her up the set of stairs and headed towards her bedroom, where we didn’t ‘fuck’. But in the words of a romance novel, we made love, and it was sweet.

CHAPTER 28

Kimberly

The morning of the wedding arrived after a blissful Friday spent with Sam. We did have a lot of running around to do. We decorated mom and dad’s back yard, prepped the wedding planner, got with the decorating team, kept Beth chilled and Joe from drinking himself silly.

Joe had opted to get ready at my house as Beth wanted mom and dad’s as it was bigger and would fit all her girlfriends in. Thankfully dad stayed there as well, it meant there were no awkward conversations going on between him and Sam.

“Are you nervous about today?”

I asked Sam as I did up his red tie, which matched his gorgeous black velvet tuxedo. I was glad he opted for the black, rather than the red as that would have been very out there.

“Not as much as I thought I’d be. Today will go smoothly, your parents’ house looks incredible. I think if you stop being a skating coach, wedding planning will be your fall back.”

“I do enjoy it, but skating is my life.”

“Don’t I know it.”

Kissing him softly on the lips before I turned around, he zipped up my dress. Catching the reflection of us both in the mirror, I felt a sudden rush of blood in my cheeks as he ran his hands down my forearms and kissed me lightly on the neck.

“My girlfriend is hot.”

I was still getting used to him calling me his girlfriend. I wasn’t as shocked as I was the first time he said it. It was over the phone with Jason yesterday afternoon. Although this whole thing started as fake dating, or a lie to cover our tracks, it hadn’t ended that way.

“And dare I say, you will have all the ladies staring at you.”

As he let go of me, I headed towards the guest bedroom where Joe was standing with one of his groomsmen, both getting in those much-needed photographs from the photographer. Posing as his cufflinks were done up and then I came in to fix his tie, which clearly no man was able to tie correctly.

“You ready?”

“I was born ready to marry Beth.”

“Glad to hear it, we need to head over shortly.”

He looked a little nervous when I mentioned the time as the photographer turned us around to get a photograph together. I didn’t have the option for a buttonhole so instead Joe had gifted me a corsage of a white rose with red ribbon. It matched perfectly with the theme.

Neither him nor Bethan had seen the garden once we had finished decorating it. I was looking forward to seeing everyone’s faces when they arrived.

With it being winter, the sun set a little earlier in the day so we had brought the ceremony forward as a special request from the photographer, so she could get those bride and groom photographs. It also meant Beth would get her first dance under the trail of fairy lights we had set up all around the garden and across the trees.

Dad had taken great pride in handling all the lights as well as dressing up the large oak tree. We had grown up playing in that tree in the backyard. My phone buzzed as the alarm I set went off to get everyone downstairs, to grab those group photos on my front porch which had also been decorated with lights around the beams, to keep with the theme.

“Right, time for photos downstairs then we will head over.”

“Is my ring bearer ready to do her job?”

Joe asked as he kneeled down towards Daisy who had been sitting and waiting patiently at the bottom of the stairs. Wrapped around her neck was a beautiful red velvet ribbon and when the time was right, one of Joe’s groomsmen was to tie on the wedding rings so she could head down towards him and Beth and give them their rings.

“I think she’s the only one who’s been ready for hours,”

Sam said as he leant against the doorframe.

Joe just smiled a little at him as he got up and did as he was told, heading downstairs with the rest of his team.
