Page 26 of My Heart Remembers

That’s the problem. The familiarity is so comforting, so delightful. Like putting on an old jumper that wraps its arms tight round your heart.

And that’s what’s so confusing.

He kissed me back.

Then he pulled away.

Which shows that he doesn’t feel the same way about me.

I had a moment of madness, sprang a kiss on him, he responded then came to his senses and broke it off.

Case closed. No need for me to be tying myself in knots over it.

My brain prickles. He let you down once. He’ll do it again.

I press my fingers to my forehead.

“Good afternoon.” Corran’s salutation floats from behind me. I turn to find him leaning round the front door. “I’m in!” he announces with a grin. “Ben said it would be fine.”

“Oh, I was looking for the Jeep,” I say with a small laugh.

That’ll teach me for judging.

“I’ve got my own car,” he says with an eye roll. “I live on my parents’ farm, not actually with them, you know. I am reasonably independent. I mean, my mum does still sometimes make my lunch if I’m working with Pa.”

“I’m sorry. I just wasn’t thinking,” I say, my cheeks flaming scarlet.

“I’m just teasing. That’s mine over there.” He points towards the sleek looking BMW parked next to Ben’s Rolls Royce. “Not quite as flashy as our friend’s, but it gets me from A to B.”

“I like it. Looks fast.”

“Well, it does go a bit quicker than the tractor, which is always a bonus. Shall we?”

He holds the door open for me. As I pass through in front of him, the fresh scent of his cologne makes me bite my lip.

Stop it, I growl to myself silently.

Seriously, what is wrong with me?

“How was Ben?” I ask, my voice rising almost to a squeak in my discombobulated state.

“Fine. Loved the idea. Very keen to get on board with it. If the residents like it, I’ve got the full green light to raise it with the Gossies.”

“Oh, you have been busy! That’s great.”

“Yeah. Apart from that, he was a bit quiet. I’ll get a beer arranged with him, find out what’s going on. He’s got a lot on his plate at the moment, what with the divorce and everything.”

We make our way along the corridor.

“So, was it Sasha?”

“Who? What?”

“Sasha Harkin. Was it Sasha that Ben married?”

“Sasha Harkin? Goodness no. No! They broke up after a couple of weeks. No. He met Sylvie at work. She was his personal assistant.” He looks at me with a wicked glint in his eye. “Bit of age gap. She was fresh out of uni, he was a partner in the firm.”

Hmm. That might explain what prompted his desire for a change of scenery.
