Finally, I pulled back. “Thank you for this.”

“Thank you for being willing to come without even knowing where we were going. That meant you trusted me. Then you did again—you jumped off the cliff because I told you to trust me. You told me you did. It’s really what I wanted more than anything, and I didn’t even really know until you told me that you did.” He blinked. “You’re magic, Raven.”

I wasn’t, but maybe he was. “Do you come here a lot?”

“I used to. Lately, no but I want to again. A lot. With you. Just the two of us, okay? The others don’t love it like I do. Ransom likes the mountains, but this isn’t really his place. He likes to go west of the lavender fields. Crew walks to the coastline to think, and I’m not sure Gunnar is really a nature guy at heart. He’d rather take a hammer and fix something.”

I kissed him again, lightly, right on the mouth. “This is your place.”

“It was, but now it’s our place. Okay?”

I was more than okay with that. “Mace, do you want to make love to me?”

I never really put it like that before, but it seemed apropos because Mace looked at me like I’d hung the stars. Like I was the kind of girl who could use the phrase make love and mean it.

Who could have waited to actually make love to someone like Mace?

“So much…” he said, his voice low. “But, Raven, I have to tell you I might be terrible at it. I don’t even remember what I saw in that stupid machine. I might be…I might need you to be patient with me.”

I knew what it took for a Super Soldier to admit to any weakness. Amias once told me they were born to be great at whatever they undertook, and if they weren’t, they’d better not admit it if they didn’t want to be decommissioned.

“Mace, I am not concerned in the slightest about how you’ll be this first time. Besides, if for some reason it doesn’t go well, we’ll have plenty of time to practice until we get it right.” And the idea of the practice pleased me.

He moved so fast, I shrieked, but he quickly sliced through the water toward the falls. “When we get to the stream, hold your breath and hang onto me,” he said.

I tried not to feel too baffled at his abrupt change of conversation—perhaps he wasn’t as interested in making love? I obeyed his directions, though, holding my breath and clinging to him as he dragged us beneath the waterfall.

We surfaced again, and the sound of the waterfall changed, echoing off the walls in a melodic way. “Where are we?”

“A cave I found.” He grinned. “I don’t know if anyone else has ever been here. I like to think it’s only mine. The falls make it hard for anyone outside to hear us. No one knows we’re here, which might be why I’ve never seen anyone else ever find this place. Although the constant ability to be spied upon is invasive, it’s also a safety net. When I was struck by lightning, they heard it. If something happened in here, they wouldn’t know.”

Interesting. “So it’s sort of dangerous and exciting?”

“Yes. But they’re going to be mad at me. We all like to be able to hear you when we so choose. Distance can make that hard. They’re not going to be happy I took you away today, but I don’t give a shit. You’ve been through a ton. You got stuck here. You were nearly killed by a lightning strike, then drank bad water. You got kidnapped, delivered a baby, tried to kill Net, and then burned your hands. Then you killed Evans so he couldn’t kill Ransom. And all of that after you just lost your brother and Amias, which meant you had to be able to travel the universe through space when you couldn’t even read.”

I quirked a brow at him. Well, if he listed it all out, I did sound more impressive. “Maybe I should be more tired than I am?” I joked.

He shook his head, pulling me onto the cave floor. “What it means is if you want to scream at the top of your lungs with only me to hear it—with no one around to know that you did—you can.”

That was an incredibly sweet offer. Maybe it would have been appealing…an hour ago. I was interested in making noise, but not because I screamed. I smiled at him, then twirled my fingertips on his chest. “Or we could make love, and no one could possibly overhear us.”

He stared at me. “On the ground? I don’t want it to be uncomfortable for you.”

“It wouldn’t be. Would the ground hurt you?” I didn’t think it would. “Because if you wanted to lie down right there, I’ll show you something I was thinking about.”

I was being flirty and a little silly right then. After my anxiety crying, it was a small miracle that I could feel like this again. Or maybe I never had before? Everything was always so serious all the time. But not in those falls. It had been like bathing in joy. Doing it with Mace made it so much better.

He lay on his back right away. “Have your way with me, Miss Raven.”

I laughed. “Well, I guess I’ll do just that.”

We were both totally naked, and I hadn’t even given that a single thought. I laid my body flat on top of his right away, loving how warm his flesh felt after the coolness of the water. “This isn’t too heavy? The floor isn’t too awful?”

“The floor feels like a soft mattress. Anything is wonderful as long as I get to be with you.”

I lifted my head to kiss all over his face. “I am going to make you feel so good. It’s going to give me so much pleasure to do so.”

Before he could answer me, I slipped down his body to take his cock in my hands. He was already slightly hard. It was gratifying to know that he could get hard for me just from the concept of talking about it. If he touched me right then, he’d find I was warm and ready for him, too, but I wanted to play for a while first.
