Hello debt.

That’s why he spends so much time at the precinct.

Before we make our grand appearance, Lory and I swing by the Hidden Bay Shopping Complex for obvious reasons.

I’m not doing bad bitch shit in oversized men’s sweatpants.

Fuck that.

The outdoor walkways are eerily silent at ten in the morning. We only see a janitor picking up leaf litter as the shops open their doors. There’s a franchise department store here where we should be able to collect what we need for the day. And that’s the one place we go to.

There will be no more stops this morning.

We’ll have to come back later to gather a full wardrobe, but I’m not concerned with it right now.

“I like that skirt,” Lory murmurs, glancing at me in the department store’s mirror. “Red is my favorite color on you.”

“Will it do?”

“Yeah. I think it will.” He spins. “How does this fit?”

I nod my approval. “Like a glove.”

“Are you ready?”

“Let’s go.”

We make it back to the car without a word spoken between us. Not that it’s tense; quite the opposite, actually. We’re both on a mission, though Lory is waiting for instructions.

“What are you going to do?” he inquires, pulling onto Main Street.

“Have a chat with Shawn.”

“And then?”

I frown as I call the police chief from my burner phone… Again.

“We’re going to hunt Don and Jose.”

“Still no answer?” Lory asks.

“No. It’s pissing me off.” I shake my head. “I’ve called a dozen times, and it just rings. No voicemail at all.”

“Oh.” He pushes my elbow off the center console and pops it open. “I almost forgot. Grabbed your phone.”

I hum, trying to calm my simmering anger. “Maybe he’ll answer this.”

The call rings twice.

Fucking twice.

“Hello?”

“I’m coming in. We need to talk.”

“Listen,” Shawn starts. “Now isn’t a good time. I’m about to leave to go see The Lofts, or what’s left of them.”

“It’s about that,” I reply softly. “I’ll be there in two minutes.”
