He’s taken aback for a moment, silent and stunned as his anger renews. I glance at the camera in the corner, catching the red light turning green.

Time is up.

“Reapers roam the city,” I inform him, smoothing a hand down my skirt as I stand. “Be safe, Grandfather. I look forward to our next visit.”

I turn my back on the wretched man, happy to doom him to his bedeviled fate.

I don’t need to say more.

He knows.

Either he’ll die or I’ll die trying to kill him.

We can’t both live.

When I get out of the shower, Lory sits against the headboard of my hotel bed with my laptop propped on his thighs. His thin cotton lounge pants do nothing to make him look less attractive. I don’t want to complain about the view of his shirtless chest... But then he cuts his gaze at me, smirking at my stalled motion.

“Don’t you have your own hotel room?”

“Yep.”

I cock my hip as I raise my brow. “Why are you here?”

“Waiting for you.”

“For what?”

He rolls his eyes. “To talk about what happened with Senior.”

“Hello?” Juan says, his voice grating on my nerves even through the speaker.

Lory turns the volume up as I perch on the bed in my towel. He frowns when the chilly, damp material touches his arm. And I huff before he comments, removing the towel and crawling under the blanket to warm myself.

“Did you mute it?” I inquire, squinting at the screen. “Or did we lose connection?”

“No.”

I nod as Juan rubs his forehead. “Someone is chewing him out.”

“Senior?” Lory suggests.

“Probably. I told him the next time I see him, I’d kill him.”

Juan rakes his fingers through his hair. “Yes, sir. Consider it done... I understand... I’ll be in on Monday with news.”

Sure he will. Not all of him, but I’ll send his ears to Senior.

“Do you know a Mathias?” I ask Lory.

“Uhm... No?” he replies. “Should I?”

“Me either,” I grumble. “Juan told Senior that I said I was going to deal with the Mathias issue, but I was struggling. When I said I didn’t know who that was, Senior informed me that was the name of Estrada’s godson. But I’ve never even heard the name.”

“We can look into him,” Lory mumbles, watching Juan move from one screen to the next. “What else did he say?”

I snort. “He wants us married immediately. And he knows we haven’t been together. Juan had other copies of the pictures on his laptop, so that was a lovely waste of time. He slapped me, and I promised to kill him. That’s the gist of the conversation.”

“He slapped you?” Lory’s voice is low, barely a growl, and his pupils blow wide.
