I’ve said all I need to say to pique her curiosity. I almost used his name, but I’ll wait for her to decide if we’re breaking rules today. Once we get inside the house, I suspect it won’t matter.

The garage opens, and I drive her car inside. Ezra steps in and looks around, frowning at the clutter and boxes. As the door rolls closed, Jasper joins us, silently standing on the interior threshold while she decides if my cousin is a threat to her.

“Does a retired mechanic live here?” Ezra muses. “This place is a fucking mess.”

“No one lives here anymore,” Jasper responds, her tone almost bored as her eyes narrow on me. “I know what you’re doing.”

He turns to me. “You fucking liar.”

“Shut up, Ezra,” I snap, widening my eyes at him. “Either you’re helping or you’re going home.”

“He can go,” she mentions, but like fuck am I letting that happen now.

“I’m staying,” Ezra firmly tells her.

Jasper glares at him. “Don’t ask questions. Don’t repeat what you hear. Forget everything you see inside. I hope I don’t need to finish where this threat is going.”

“You’ll kill me if I do?” he smarts, grinning at her.

“I will.”

“Before or after a quick public fuck?”

“Depends on my mood,” she murmurs to him and gives us her back as she disappears inside.

Ezra goes to follow, but I hold my hand out, stopping him.

“Don’t piss her off while the last guy is still gurgling in his own blood.”

He raises an inquisitive brow. “Metaphorically?”

I just give him an unimpressed look.

“Literally?”

I nod.

He nods back. “This isn’t how I was expecting my Thursday to go.”

“You should see what happens on Fridays,” I whisper, half hoping he doesn’t hear me.

I sit patiently in Ezra’s car for all of four minutes before he bursts my peaceful bubble.

“What happens on Friday nights?”

“With whom?” I counter. “You’ll have to be more specific.”

“Riley,” he replies, rolling his eyes as if I’m being dense.

“How the fuck should I know?” I inquire. “I don’t keep up with him.”

He gnaws on his lower lip as he watches me. “I don’t know yet.”

I frown at him and turn toward the window as we drive through Crimson Bay. The city is a vast masterpiece at dusk, the California sunset casting rays of golden light off the windows. The shadows create expansive illusions that dance across the roadways, playing tricks on your mind.

A chunk of my heart belongs to this place. Its violence thrums through my veins as surely as my blood does.

I’m not happy about Riot taking my car to dispose of David’s body, but I hadn’t realized the amount of blood on my clothes until he pointed it out. I didn’t need to explain that none of the cops would ask me questions if I got pulled over... He knows.
