“The delivery should be quick,” Lory reminds me as the elevator glides to a stop. “We can go for dinner afterward, maybe to Crimson Harvest?”

“I’m not hungry.”

“Okay,” he skeptically agrees.

I’m too familiar with the expression he’s giving me. The one that says he’ll feed me, anyway. And I’ll eat half the meal to keep him quiet.

Round-and-round we go… The more we change, the more we stay the same.

Lory opens the passenger door of his Mercedes for me, then he frowns as he stares at me.

“I’ll eat. God,” I gripe. “Stop looking at me like that.”

“It’s not you.” He shakes his head. “I don’t remember leaving the doors unlocked, but I guess I did. I was in a hurry.”

He walks around the front of his car and folds himself into the driver’s seat. I turn to fully face him.

“You’ve been unusually forgetful today. Did you hit your head or something?”

“No.” He chuckles to himself. “I just rushed out the door, trying to keep you from waiting for me.”

I nod. He’s not as punctual as me, but I don’t normally complain when I have to wait for him.

“Where’s the duffle bag?” I ask, teasing him. “It’s here, right?”

Lory rolls his chestnut eyes. “In the back seat.”

I turn to grab it, laughing when I pick up the empty bag from the floorboard.

“Did you forget something else? What’s going on with you today?”

“No,” he drawls. “Why?”

I raise a brow at him. “This bag is empty.”

“What?” He snatches the duffle from me, splitting the zipper in his haste.

“There’s nothing in it…” I purse my lips as a thunderous expression rolls across his features. “Why are you so angry?”

“I put the ecstasy in the bag,” Lory growls, furious. “And I put the bag in the back seat before I went up to grab my wallet.”

I take the duffle from him before he rips it to shreds. “The bag was empty and on the floorboard. Did you see anyone—”

“Unusual?” he finishes for me. “Yeah. I did. Tall guy, light brown hair... Neck tats and a flannel.”

“I don’t know anyone who lives here with neck tattoos.”

He shakes his head. “Me either. I thought the guy was here for Ms. Macie, so I didn’t really pay much attention otherwise.”

“Lory, Ms. Macie has been out of the country for three weeks. She should be returning today or tomorrow, but she hasn’t called me for her mail yet.”

“Fuck,” he yells, slamming his hands against the steering wheel.

“Did someone steal from us?” I ask, fighting a grin.

It’s not funny. Not even a little bit… But I think all the bullshit in the last week has broken me. I care less and less each day, no longer concerned with drawing my lines for everyone to see.

“Why are you smiling about this?” he snaps. “That was five-hundred grand worth of beans.”
