I raise a brow. “Who’s house is that?”

“Mine soon,” she replies. “He’s not supposed to be there.”

“Who is he?”

Gem watches me for a moment, contemplating her answer. “Juan Carlos. My grandfather’s top advisor.”

“Why are we watching him?” I ask, leaning closer to get a look at his face.

“Because I want to kill him,” she states nonchalantly. “But I can’t until I have evidence of his disloyalty or I kill my grandfather first.”

“What?”

She shrugs as she waves her hand. “I mean, I can kill him before I kill my grandfather, but I don’t know what the repercussions would be. So, I guess I’m just weighing my options.”

“Okay,” I drawl, not sure how to help with that. “What’s he doing?”

“Pacing.”

I scoff at her obvious answer. “I can see that. But why?”

“He’s waiting for a phone call.”

“Is this live?”

Gem shakes her head. “No. There’s a slight delay in the system. This is from two-ish hours ago. I skipped through all the footage while he wasn’t there, but I stopped it here to see what he was doing.”

“And the consensus is?” I prompt.

“He’s a shady fuck whom I’d like to gut,” she says with a grin. “I’ve seen this behavior from him, so I’m just waiting for... That.”

The man on the screen holds his phone to his ear, keeping his steady pace across the living room. Jasper—Gem—turns the volume up.

“It’s about time—Sorry... No. Everything is ready. We were waiting for our window... Yes. Two guys inside... They’re close. Some are feeling jumpy about the situation, so I’ve advised them to be on standby... I can’t change their loyalty. I can only show them what I know... Yes. But truthfully, I’m not sure I showed them enough to sway their beliefs... What do you mean, my fault? I’ve done everything I—No. I haven’t... We’ll flush them out. If that doesn’t work, then I’ll take care of the problem myself... Yes. Two hours.”

Gem’s back snaps straight as she glares at the screen, tracking his movements.

“What is he planning?” she whispers to herself.

“Who is he talking to?” I ask.

“I don’t know,” she mumbles. “He never says a word to hint at who it might be. But I have a list of possibilities.”

Juan stops abruptly. “Yes. I’ll call you when it’s underway... I won’t be there. They would see me and know… I don’t believe they’ll just guess that it’s me… Yes. My thoughts exactly.”

Gem’s eyes bounce around the screen, checking all the angles as he disappears from one room and pops up in the next. Juan pulls his phone away from his ear and frowns at it.

“Dick,” he mutters as he moves through the house toward an outside door.

She taps at her lip for a moment, then she jumps up from the bed. “Put your clothes on. We’ve got to go.”

“Okay.” I climb to my feet and grab my pants. “Where are we going?”

“Upstairs. Something isn’t—”

A slight tremor rocks through the building, cutting her off. But it’s not quite like an earthquake. This rumbles from the bottom, more noise than actually shaking the foundation.

“Hurry,” she commands, rushing into her closet.
