I shake my head and lean down, moving the computer equipment and files to get the backup hard drive. It’s the size of a cell phone but five times as thick, so it’s not easy to miss.

And I don’t miss it...

It’s fucking gone.

“Gate’s already jammed,” Javi yells to me. “Come on. We got the Merc. Checked Gem’s car. It’s empty, but the tires have bullets in them.”

“Fuck,” I snarl.

“Come on,” Tomas urges. “Get the fuck in the car. We’re running out of ammo.”

Javier chuckles. “You might be, but I’ve got two more clips.”

“You’re fucking driving,” Tomas argues.

I dart from the booth, diving into the back seat as Javi speeds away. In the parking lot of The Lofts, one foot soldier lies on his back, blood on his face. Someone has mowed him down, and I’m guessing that was Jasper.

I dial 9-1-1 despite hearing the sirens closing in. “There’s a fire at The Lofts. The residents have an evacuation plan, but I have no way of knowing who’s still in the building.”

“Are you management?”

“No.”

Clicking fills the background. “A resident?”

“No. I just drove by. I have a friend who lives there, but she’s out. She left her phone.”

“Units are on their way now. Please, stay on the line.”

I hang up.

I don’t have time to wait.

“Turn around so you can get your cars. The police will be all over this until Jasper steps in.”

“We came in a cab,” Javier tells me. “We were planning on drinking.”

“Okay. Then let’s find Jasper.”

Tomas turns to look at me. “You should call—”

“I’m not going to call him,” I growl. “I don’t even have his number to call.”

“Wouldn’t it be in her phone?” Javi inquires, swerving as he heads away from the north side of town.

I scoff. “You think she’d just keep an assassin’s phone number stored in her cell?”

“No,” he mumbles.

“Why are you driving?”

“Tomas is still barefoot,” Javier explains. “And he stepped on glass.”

I rub my forehead. “Pull over up here and let me drive. I’m taking you both home.”

“Man,” Tomas breathes. “What a fucking night to drink, huh?”

“At least we know why Dean and Reggie were acting sketchy,” Javier mentions.
