Davos’s fingers probed the entrance to his body as he moaned and squirmed. He felt like begging, but he wasn’t sure what he’d be begging Davos to do—to stop or go faster. He sucked in a sharp breath as Davos pushed into his body. Deeper and deeper, taking away his power to think so that all he could do was feel. Blake surged back, impaling himself deeply and it was Davos’s turn to suck in a harsh breath. Davos began to thrust and all the while, he murmured to him sweetly, soft words he didn’t understand, but they affected him all the same. It went on and on until Blake lost all sense of time and place. This was where he belonged—had always belonged—here in Davos’s arms. Something deep inside him ignited and burned a pathway down his body and his spine until his orgasm hit with such intensity that he saw stars. He felt himself falling like a star and relaxed into it, allowing himself to plummet back to earth. He wasn’t afraid anymore. In fact, he knew he’d be safe, because Davos was there to catch him.

Chapter Six

Later, as Davos lay spooning Blake, and holding him tightly in his arms, he began to talk to Blake, telling him things Blake thought he didn’t talk about very often. He talked about his sons.

“Mikos is bitter and unhappy, but I don’t know how to fix it. I believe he loves his mate, Ryan, but he can’t or won’t let himself trust him and be happy with him. I think he’s afraid of being hurt again.”

“Because of that person who raised him?”

“Partially, yes. But because of his brothers too. The twins, Anarr and Vannos are both gone now. Not dead, but they never come back to visit, and they may never again. Anarr is married to a former Lycan general, who is still bitter about losing the war. He despises Tygeria. He has poisoned Anarr against me and rarely brings him home.”

“And the other twin?”

“Vannos. He’s married to the Moravian king, who keeps him isolated in his kingdom. Vannos is unhappy, or so I hear. His husband won’t allow him any contact, because he doesn’t want to be drawn into the Axis sphere of influence. Or so he says. I understand I have a grandson I’ve never met.”

“I heard another one of your sons died in the war.”

“Two of them, actually. Larz died just after he graduated training and went to his first duty station. And Nicarr, who wanted to avenge his brother, fought ferociously in battle and took unnecessary risks. He died a hero’s death.”

“I’m so sorry.”

He nodded, his eyes full of anguish. “Mikos never got over their loss. Neither have I. Perhaps I should have made them wait until they were older before they went off to fight, but that’s not our way.”

Blake felt unreasonably angry at his words. He wanted to snap at him that their “way” got his children killed, but where in the world was that coming from? He’d never met either of the young men, but still he felt so unutterably sad, like he’d experienced a tragic personal loss of his own.

To change the subject, because he couldn’t keep thinking about it, he asked about the last son—Derrick.

“There’s one more boy, isn’t there?”

“Yes, Derrick.” Davos’s lips tightened, and a look of anger came across his face. “He got mixed up with a filthy pirate a few years ago. He’s dead to me now as well.”

“No, you mustn’t say such a thing. He’s still your son.”

“Too much has been said between us. We can never go back now.”

“But that’s so sad.”

“I wish… If I hadn’t been alone with them all those years, things might have been different. I’m not a soft or kind person—I’m a warrior king and I’m not allowed that luxury. If I’d had someone to teach them things, to teach them not to be so angry, then perhaps they’d still be here.”

What things was he talking about? Like caring about other people’s feelings? Like being kind? The Tygerian world was so harsh and fierce. Maybe it would have made a difference in those boys’ lives if they’d had someone to show them love. To show them how to love.

“Maybe it’s not too late.”

The king sighed. “I’m afraid it is. I know who set the explosion, you see.”

“You do? Who was it?”

“My son Mikos. We’ve had an informant. One of his men who is still loyal to me.”

“What will you do?”

“There can be only one punishment for high treason. He’ll be executed.”

“No!” the word was torn from him, and he turned on Davos, shocked and sickened. “What do you mean? You can’t kill him! He’s your son. I won’t let you!”

“What are you talking about, Blake? People were killed in that explosion, including some of my soldiers and council members. Mikos had hoped—was trying—to kill me, and he would have succeeded if not for you.”

“Don’t say that. You can’t know for sure.”
