She bristles further. Incredulously asking, “Are you serious?” He gives her a dead expression.

She stomps forward picking up her clothes from the floor and storming out. Luca takes another drag on his cigarette before levelling his eyes on me. “Stop stressing out, we’ll just move into one of the penthouses.”

“That’s their home, not some fucking penthouse.” That's not why I'm angry. I'm angry because he's given up on Benny and Francesca. I don't care about me. I've never had a relationship with Salvatore nor do I want one but my youngest siblings will grow up without a mother or a father and it makes me beyond livid.

“Then we will buy another home.” He shrugs. Sometimes his nonchalant attitude grates on me but at the same time, it puts things in perspective. This isn't our biggest problem right now. Our issue is how we're going to fix the shitstorm that is brewing with the Rafaellos and the Marinos. We need to get them in line and fast. The longer we leave it, the more time they have to gather support from the other families and overthrow us.

“You're thinking, I can see the cogs turning. What is it?” He nods to me as he gets out of bed and tugs on his trousers. I take a seat on the armchair by the windows and he follows taking a seat on the chair opposite.

“We can't let this situation go any further. We need to step up, show the families we mean business and our age has fuck all to do with it.”

He sighs, resting his hands on the arms of the chair. “What do you want, Enzo? From life. What are we doing?” I lean back in my chair glancing out the window at the Hudson. We've been in limbo since our mother died, not really knowing where we stand in the food chain of our world.

“I want to secure our place in this world. I want to make sure nobody ever hurts our family again. I want Raff, Benito and Francesca to grow up in a world where they worry and want for nothing. I want them safe and I want them happy.”

He nods his agreement. “We obviously can't count on anyone else for support. It's you and me.” We've spoken about stepping up, we've spoken about the empire we want to build one day but it's only been talk. We've not put it into action yet, mainly because we haven't been pushed to do so but this is the push we've needed.

I lean forward resting my hands on my knees. “If we're going to do this, do what we've spoken about. I need you with me as my second. You're the only person I can trust.”

He starts to smirk. “I'm with you, Enzo. I'll stand by your side no matter what.”

I nod and my lips curve up into a smile. “Fuck the five families. It's one family and it's ours. There's only one name I want people to remember and it's Moretti. Fuck the alliance, we're taking it all.”

His lips widen into a menacing grin. “Well then, call Carms. Let's go hunting.”

I want the world at my siblings' feet. I want them to have every opportunity in life. We’ll step into our place. Making sure the Moretti name is something to be feared and respected, whatever it takes for my family. Whatever sacrifices I need to make, I'll make them.

Enzo

Present-day

Manhattan, New York City

Three days have passed and I think I’m going crazy. I've called her so many times her voicemail is full she won’t return my calls or texts anymore. I’ve barely slept, I’m not hungry and I’m drinking way more than I should. I can't function.

I’ve seen her every day since I met her until these past three days and I have now concluded, I can’t go two fucking days without seeing her. The supposed most powerful man in the western hemisphere and I’m pining after her like a whipped dog. It’s like withdrawal. Four hours and my brain begins to wonder what she’s doing. Ten hours, I swear I can smell her perfume. Twenty-four hours and I’m getting twitchy. Seventy-two hours? I’m going out of my fucking mind.

I’m sitting in my office under Euphoria and I call her for the millionth time. When it goes straight to voicemail, I finally snap. I physically can’t take it anymore, if she won’t answer her phone, I’ll go to her and make her listen. I head to her apartment first and Hannah answers the door. Her face drops when she sees me, those blue eyes narrowing on me.

“Is she here?”

“She doesn’t want to speak to you.” She says pulling the door closed. As if she could stop me if I wanted to barge past her.

I keep my foot wedged in the door. “I need to see her,” I say desperation lining my voice, Hannah’s face softens slightly as she takes in my appearance and something like pity crawls past her features. Usually, that would infuriate me but right now the only thing I can think of is that I need to fix this.

She sighs. “She's not here.”

“Well, where is she?”

“Look, Enzo. I like you. I like how happy you’ve made my best friend recently. She may act tough, but that girl wears her heart on her sleeve and you’ve really fucking hurt her.”

“Just tell me where she is.”

“I’ll tell you because I want you to sort this out but if you fuck with her, so help me god. I may not look like much but I will find a way to make you pay.” She says with a stern look on her face. Her accent comes out a little heavier but it's still not intimidating. She‘s about as scary as the easter bunny or Tinkerbell but I appreciate the love for her friend.

“She's at the club.” She says resigned.
