“You could get with someone else to show him that it’s over,” Jacey suggested.

Both Kiera and Talia whipped their heads toward Jacey. “That isnota helpful suggestion,” Talia told her.

Jacey shrugged. “That’s what I do when a guy won’t take a hint.”

She had no qualms about sexual relationships. She saw them as a means to an end rather than a means to a happy relationship. It’s how she found such success in stripping on the weekends when she didn’t have classes. She made more money than both Talia and Kiera, and she had no problems using her body to earn a living. She claimed it was no different than star athletes making millions from putting their bodies and abilities on show. Kiera had to admit that the sentiment made sense. She could never put herself in such a vulnerable position, but sheimagined that Jacey didn’t see it as vulnerability but rather as a different type of power.

In a way, Kiera utilized her body as a powerful tool to make money, too. However, it wasn’t the way she found power in her everyday life.

Sex was Jacey’s power tool in the way that controlling her relationships with an iron fist and avoiding commitment was Kiera’s.

Talia still needed to find her strength.

“Men aren’t worth it,” Kiera said, placing a hand on Talia’s knee. “Unless, of course, you find one who’s not tangled in organized crime.”

Talia laughed lightly as a loud knock sounded at their door. They all sighed and looked at each other. A moment passed before Kiera finally sighed and stood. “Don’t stress yourselves out. I’ve got it,” she teased.

When she tugged the door open and met the black eyes of the man standing on the other side, it took everything in her not to take a step back.

“Vincent,” she greeted. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

She wanted to know how he got her address, but based on his friendship with Marco, she had pretty good assumptions.

He stood straighter, peering behind her and into the small apartment. For the first time, she felt slightly ashamed of the size of it, but the cute decorations and color made up for it. Three design-oriented women living together ensured the apartment had the cutest and handiest accessories. She tugged the door closer to her, blocking his view of the apartment’s interior.

He extended a small box to her, and Kiera eyed it but didn’t take it.

“What’s that?” she asked.

“A gift.”

“Sorry, but I’m not interested.” It was a lie, but she couldn’t stop it from tumbling off of her tongue.

Kiera felt very interested in him, though she couldn’t explain it. He didn’t have the same soft demeanor that most of her past conquests carried. He didn’t look like he’d put up with her adamant need to be in control, and that would not do. Did that excite or scare her?

He pushed the box closer to her. “Take it,” he told her, his tone leaving no room for argument. Chills trailed up her spine as she looked at the package.

“Not until you tell me what’s inside.”

The push and pull felt good. She’d never interacted with a man who pushed back, even when she refused to back down. Why did it excite her?

“You’re going to be a good girl and take the box.” She opened her mouth to say no, but his look stopped her. “You don’t want to know what will happen if you tell me no again, Kiera.”

Her name on his lips was a warning; there was no denying it.

She wanted to push back—to test the limits he set for her—but she instead reached for the box, tightening her fingers around it and pulling it to her chest.

“I’m going to pick you up tomorrow evening, and I expect that you’ll be wearing what I’ve given you. Do you understand?”

She wanted to pant from the heat that shone in his eyes. The back and forth between them had brought a dampness between her thighs that she hadn’t expected.

“Why are you picking me up tomorrow?” she asked.

“It’s your night off, correct?”

She nodded slowly, pulling the box closer to her chest.

“I’m taking you to dinner.”
