Dani passes her a coffee and takes a sip before she speaks. ‘So, are you looking forward to your date tonight?’

She bites back a smile as Damon’s words come back to her. ‘You know what? I think I might cancel. I’m just not feeling it.’

‘Is that so?’

‘What does that mean?’

‘It means you’re still hung up on this Nick guy, and no one else is going to even come remotely close to him. So what are you going to do about it?’

‘What can I do about it. It’s over.’

‘Yeah. That’s exactly what it sounds like. Or, how about this for a crazy idea? How about you try to find him and get in contact? Who knows, Nick could be going through the same date after date scenario you are. What’s to say he’s not still pining after you, like you are after him?’

‘Hey, I’d hardly say I’m pining.’

‘I’m sorry, but you are absolutely pining! Think about it, Scarlett. But you know I’m right. You need to get in touch with him.’

Scarlett sips her coffee and glances across the road again. Damon is back at the mouth of the alley. He smiles, then vanishes again.

Seems like the Boogeyman and her friend are on the same page. Maybe she needs to send Santa one last letter.

‘Do you have everythingyou need?’ Dani asks, helping to load the last of the bags into the back of Scarlett’s car.

She quickly double checks the number of bags, then nods. ‘I think so. There’s no mention of freak snow storms this year, so I don’t need to load up with as many provisions.’

‘Have you packed enough food for two, just in case Nick does arrive? You wouldn’t want to have to get dressed to go and buy food. That would interfere with the plans to stay in bed with him all week,’ Dani says, making ridiculous kissy faces at her.

‘Oh, knock it off!’ Scarlett desperately wishes that part will come true. If Nick shows up at all she’ll be over the moon. Spending a week in bed with him would be the cherry on the cake. ‘I’m trying not to get carried away, Dani. I don’t even know if he’ll come. I could go up there and end up with my nose buried in a book the whole time.’

‘Exactly! You have no idea either way, so stop assuming he won’t show up. Who knows, he could be waiting for you when you get there.’

She closes the boot of her car and shrugs, suddenly not so sure about her plan. ‘A year is a long time. He could have met someone else.’ Although she hopes Damon would have mentioned if he had. His job is to scare people, not play cruel tricks on them. The Boogeyman hadn’t done anything to make her think otherwise, so there’s no reason to think he’d start now. And both Nick and Damon had made it clear they’re friends.

‘Would you just stop over thinking everything!’
