‘Oh well thanks for that.’ She wipes blood from her nose. ‘You invade my thoughts like that again and I'll tear off your dick and make you eat it. Do you understand me?’

He licks his lips and smiles at her. ‘For someone who thrives on pain, that’s one hell of a tease.’

She shoves him back, wiping her bloody hand on his black t-shirt. ‘I really hate you!’

He sucks in a breath and she groans.

‘Oh lay off! I hate that I can’t insult you, without you getting pleasure from it. You're an asshole, but you’re an asshole who is close to Nick. I am too. I don’t want him to die,’ she says, wiping the last of the blood from her nose.

Whatever trace of guilt he may have felt about what he did to her, doesn’t hang around for long. He can’t afford human traits like guilt and remorse. There’s no way he could do his job, if he regretted everything he did to people.

‘I know. That’s why I haven’t killed you.’

She crosses her arms and glares at him. ‘Oh wow! That’s nice to know! So I don’t suppose you have had any bright ideas? We’ve only got a few days to find him.’

‘Get me a list of everyone who has access to the workshop. Someone put his cuff in his bedroom. I know it’s going to be a long list, but it’s a starting point. Someone took it off him, and left it here so we couldn’t track him.’

‘Do you think that’s what happened?’

Damon leans back against the wall, crossing his arms as another thought hits him. ‘Can you see Nick just handing it over?’

‘Of course not!’ She pauses, then frowns at him. ‘So you’re saying he wasn’t physically able to stop someone taking it off him? Or, do you think he took it off and left?’

‘As in left the job?’ He runs his tongue over his fangs. That thought never crossed his mind. ‘You think he’d leave? Walk away from his contract?’

‘No.’

‘You answered fast.’

‘It’s Nick.’

‘Yeah. No way he’d call it quits. Nick is sickeningly devoted to his job. Can I check his room?’

Eve surprises him by nodding. ‘Of course. We should talk to Kane too.’

‘Does the asshole talk?’

Eve actually grins at that and, for some reason, he likes it. ‘He’s not here to talk, but yes, he can. You just heard him speak, so stop being an ass. He spends a lot of time with Nick. We can trust him.’

Damon licks his lips. ‘I’ll be the judge of that.’

‘Seriously? You want to do that mind probe thing on Kane?’

‘I’m not trusting him until I do.’

She gives him a long look, then shakes her head. ‘It’s your funeral. I trust you can get into Nick’s room without needing something like the code for the door?’

‘You know I can.’

‘Fine. Just please don’t let anyone see you do that mist disappearing thing you do. I’ll get Kane and meet you there in a bit.’

Damon watches her walk away. She’s a strange woman. He dematerialises, melting into the shadows, moving through the workshop completely invisible to everyone. He reforms inside Nick’s room and looks around the vast suite. Being Santa certainly has its perks. Damon was given a derelict house as part of his contract. Lucky him!

Damon paces the wooden floor, opening and closing his hands as he walks. He’s struggling to control his darkness. Nick is doing this to him. He never had a problem until that man took over. He hadn’t expected to be accepted, but Nick treated him just like everyone else. He’ll never admit it to Nick, but he’s hands down the best Santa he’s worked with.

And the team needs him.

He pulls off his coat, tossing it on the chair by the fireplace. ‘Right Nick. Let’s find out what the fuck is going on.’
