‘I’ll be fine.’
She pushes back from him and waits until he looks at her. ‘Nick. Don't do that.’
‘Do what?’
‘You’re brushing me off.’
He rests his head on his hand and smiles at her. ‘No I’m not.’
‘Yes you are. That might pass in the workshop where you’re the boss, but not here.’
‘I thought you liked me being the boss?’
She shoves him in the arm. ‘I didn’t mean like that. And yes, I really do like it. But can you please answer my question, Nick. I’m worried for you.’
He nods and runs his hand down her cheek. ‘I’m sorry. I just don’t want to add to all the shit I’ve already landed on your plate.’
‘I’m in this far. No stopping now.’
‘Okay, the answer is I don’t know. I honestly don’t know what will happen to my magic, or to me, as a result of that.’ He holds out his hand and she can see the trembling. ‘My magic is stabilised by the workshop. I don’t know what will happen if I’m away for too long - especially this time of year. My magic is increasing. I feel odd, Scarlett. Like my skin is charged. It’s the only way I can describe it.’
He runs his fingers through her hair. ‘Being with you takes the edge off. And I seriously don’t mean that as blunt as it sounded. It’s just the magic seems more controlled when I’m with you like this. And no, that’s not the reason I want to be with you, so don’t even suggest that.’
She lies back down beside him, tracing the ink on his arm. Nothing he just said is putting her at ease. His entire world is so different to what she’s used to. It’s like he’s speaking of a fairytale or something like that. But the part that’s scaring her is what happens to him if his team can’t find him in time.
He rolls over to face her and brushes her hair back from her face. ‘Hey. It’ll all be fine, I promise.’
‘How exactly can you promise that?’
He winks and smirks at her. ‘Because I’m Santa.’

Nick climbs back intobed beside Scarlett and takes her in his arms. He’d spent the last hour clearing the snow from the driveway and along the track to the main road. His power is increasing, and the painful vibrations made digging the snow more difficult, but they’re running out of time. They’ll have to leave soon.
He runs his fingers along Scarlett’s face. Her soft body fits so perfectly with his. She groans in her sleep, and hugs his arm closer to her chest.
