Scarlett watches as Damon wraps his massive wings around Nick’s body, then disappears, taking Nick with him.

‘Where did they go?’

‘Home,’ Hunter explains as he holds out his arms. ‘Come on. Time we get out of here before more of those assholes come back to finish the job.’

She allows Hunter to pick her up, hanging on to his neck as he lifts them off the ground and away from the mountain.

Scarlett hasn’t gota clue how they managed it, but Hunter transported them all the way from Ireland to Lapland in less than a minute.

But not only that. When they landed and she was led through the workshop by Hunter, Damon was already there with Nick and some other members of the team.

A woman with pink hair hurries past Scarlett and Hunter, rushing over to Damon.

‘How is he?’

‘Weak,’ Damon says, as he lifts Nick off the ground. The woman pulls off his coat, before Damon lies him back on the ground. ‘He needs to connect again. Should be okay then.’ He tears Nick’s t-shirt off him, pulling the remains of it out from under him.

‘Who helped him?’

Damon nods over at Scarlett. ‘That’s Scarlett. She knows everything.’

The woman gets up, and smiles as she holds out her hand. ‘I’m Eve. Nick’s assistant.’

‘He told me about you.’

Eve laughs and goes back over to Nick. ‘Yeah well, don’t believe everything the Boss tells you. How bad did he get before he lost consciousness?’

Scarlett takes a few seconds to realise everyone is looking at her. ‘Oh sorry. He was up and down a lot over the last day. It was like he was getting cramps in his arms. He tried to hide it but it wasn’t entirely successful.’

Damon and Eve manoeuvre Nick on the ground, placing him under a heavy chandelier type light hanging from the ceiling.

‘What are you doing?’ Scarlett asks. Surely they should be trying to help Nick instead of putting him on the floor. It doesn't make sense.

‘This is the heart of the original workshop,’ Eve explains. ‘It’s where the magic lives. Nick’s Christmas magic is stabilised by the workshop and vice versa. One can’t survive without the other. All I know is that being away this time of year has broken the link between Nick and the workshop. If they can’t connect to each other... Let’s just say we need them to connect.’

Scarlett doesn't need to ask Eve to explain. Her face says it all.

‘All we can do now is wait, and hope he comes through.’ She stuffs her hands into her pockets and looks over at Damon, leaning against the railing. ‘So,’ Eve says. ‘Did Damon make the introductions?’

He turns his head towards Eve, eyebrows raised.

‘Stupid question. Of course not. Damon is our delightful Boogeyman. This is Reve, the Sandman, Flint, the Horseman, Jokul or Jok, is Jack Frost, Hunter is Cupid, and Cobh is Triton.’

‘I’m a seriously kick-ass merman, but you already saw me in action.’ Cobh holds out his hand, smiling when Scarlett shakes it.

‘Thank you, Cobh.’ Eve faces Scarlett and rolls her eyes. ‘And these seven men are the reason I drink far too much coffee for my own good. Bunch of egos on legs this lot.’

‘I’ll get some chairs. We’ll stay until he comes around.’

‘Thanks, Jok.’ Eve crouches down beside Nick and rubs his arm. ‘Come on Boss. I’m not running this place without you.’

Scarlett looks from Eve to the team, then to everyone gathered around here. She can see the same thing on all their faces. They’re worried. Nick said they work for him, but looking around the room, she knows it’s so much more than that. Nick saved each of them, gave them a second chance. They care about him and, from the little she knows of him after a few short days, he cares about them too. They’re a big family.

She thanks Jokul as he gestures to a chair he brought out for her. ‘Actually do you want to get cleaned up first?’ he asks, frowning at the purple blood on her clothes.

‘I’d like to stay with him if that’s okay.’

He nods. ‘Of course. Make yourself comfortable. We could be here for a few hours.’
