‘Travelling at that speed around the world and delivering all the gifts takes a massive amount of energy. That’s why my magic increases this time of year. I need it to survive the job. But it takes it out of me. I’ll get back and, after loading up on a serious amount of calories, I’ll hit the bed for a few days.’

‘A few days?’

He nods, running his hands through her hair hypnotically. ‘I’m usually unconscious anywhere from a week to ten days. My body crashes and I need to sleep to get back on track.’

‘But how can you survive that long without food or water?’

He gestures around them. ‘The workshop keeps me alive.’

‘I don’t get any of this,’ she admits. The more she hears, the more bizarre and unbelievable it all sounds.

‘I’d like you to stay here until I get the run out of the way. After that, I’ll make sure you’re brought home. Once I’ve completed the run you’ll be safe. But just to be sure, the team can take it in turns to watch over you while I’m asleep. I promise nothing will happen to you. You have my word.’

Scarlett nods, curling into him when he pulls her close to his chest. Until he mentioned her leaving, she hadn’t thought about that. It makes sense that he’d go back to his world and she’d go back to hers. He’s Santa. He fights demons or whatever those things were. This is his life. It’s here with his team and Eve.

Staying with him would mean leaving so much behind, and after only knowing him for a few days, that’s hardly a sensible or reasonable thing to consider.

His arms tighten around her. Is he picking up on her thoughts? She thinks it’s only her desires he can feel, but she’s not sure. She doesn't want to ask. It’s unfair to put either of them in that situation.

‘We’d better get dressed.’

She nods against his solid chest, but doesn't move. Breathing in his scent, listening to his heartbeat, it’s all so right.

‘It would put too much of a target on you, Scarlett. I won’t put you at risk like that.’ He kisses the top of her head, then pulls away to look at her. His eyes are white again. God she desperately loves when they do that. He smiles and she knows he heard that.

‘You’ll be late for the meeting.’

He nods. ‘Yeah.’ He gets out of bed and offers her his hand. ‘Come on. Shouldn’t keep them waiting.’

Nick slips on his t-shirt, his eyes never leaving Scarlett as she gets dressed at the other side of the bed. He loves seeing her in his room like this. She belongs here. Belongs with him. A few days with her and she’s managed to captivate him like no one has before. It’s beyond ridiculous, but he’s going with it. When you know someone is right for you, you know.

He picks up the leather cuff, then fastens it around his wrist where it belongs. He still hasn't got a clue how it separated from his wrist and then found its way back to his room.

He still doesn’t know who tried to kill him.
